At SDCC ’18 The Beat had the opportunity to attend the Steven Universe panel and sit down with Zach Callison (voice of Steven) for a brief interview.  In the interview we discussed the latest revelations from Steven Universe and what’s next for Steven.  Some spoilers ahead for those who are not caught up.

Question: So there’s the big reveal that Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond, how much of the script do you guys know beforehand and how did you react to that twist?

Callison:  We’ve been sitting on that for a while, by the way, it was kind of excruciating. We get the full storyboard description for each episode as they come and for me, personally, I talk to Rebecca [Sugar] a lot about upcoming stuff, and really the only thing I don’t ask about is stuff that’s specifically new knowledge to Steven. But that was one thing that she did mention early on because it affects so much. It’s always fun because we have at least a year lead time on the episodes and if she tells me about them in advance it’s like a year and a half to two years before anybody’s ever going to hear about it. So that’s how far in the future we have to keep our mouths shut.

Q:  What can you say about where Steven is headed in the next episodes?

Callison:  Oh I really don’t want to say something that’s going to get me in trouble. So much crazy stuff happened in the last episode but there’s still an apparent threat and a lot of work to be done.  So it’s not all sunshine and rainbows just yet – there’s still some incredibly difficult things to do for the gems. So more conflict I suppose.

Q:  We were talking about Rose Quartz being Pink Diamond and a lot of fans actually guessed that a while ago. Were there any fan theories that you encountered that absolutely blew you away or were really strange?

Callison:  The Sneeple fan theory was just incredible. It blew me away because how much detail was put into it. Ronaldo’s snake people thing was turned into an actual fan theory for the show that really wraps up everything nicely.  It explained a lot. I was very much enlightened.

Q:  Are you here to shut it down then?  There are no Sneeple?

Callison:  No, it’s cannon. It was just amazing to finally understand the full unbridled brilliance of Rebecca’s narrative. The snake people!
