Later today there’s going to be a presentation in Hall H (we’ve not heard much from there yet this convention!) from Marvel Studios, in which I’m expecting we’ll see some kind of teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and maybe some new Dr Strange info. But one thing that now seems certain is that we’re going to find out a lot more about Thor: Ragnarok.
The third Thor movie has already unveiled a cast including new additions like Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban, but early today Marvel’s social media wunderkind Ryan Penagos showed off a new display in the convention centre. And it suggests there may be an added wrinkle to the movie. We already knew that Hulk, who vanished at the end of Age of Ultron, would be returning in some capacity for Thor: Ragnarok… but now it looks as though he’ll be going to war.
Penagos showed off a set of props which were immediately recognised as being the clothing and weaponry which Hulk dons and utilises during Greg Pak and Carlo Pagualayan’s Planet Hulk storyline. In that story, Hulk was tricked by a group of douche scientists (including Reed Richards and Tony Stark) and hurled into outer space, so he’d never be a threat to Earth again. After his ship is diverted, however, he ends up having to fight for his life in a gladiatorial combat on a distant planet.
By the time things are over, Hulk is very, very mad indeed.
It’s an interesting choice for the movie, especially as there’s enough material in there to do a solo Hulk film by itself. Doubtless we’ll learn more later this afternoon….
