Quirk Books, possibly best known for publishing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, got into the graphic novel game with the May release of Manfried the Man by Caitlin Major and Kelly Bastow. While announcing their current graphic novel slate to Publishers Weekly, they unveiled a real oddity: Giraffes on Horseback Salad.
Giraffes on Horseback Salad is a script Salvador Dali wrote for a theoretical Marx Brothers film, only to have it rejected by MGM. It was considered lost for decades until discovered in Dali’s papers in 1996. Screenwriter Josh Frank, comedian Tim Heidecker and Spanish artist Manuela Pertega are behind the graphic novel adaption. Let’s face it, if the publisher’s name is “Quirk,” Dali writing for the Marx Brothers is living up to your name!
Also on the schedule:
- Hocus & Pocus: The Legend of Grimm’s Woods
- Knights Club: The Bands of Bravery
There are currently 4 graphic novels scheduled for 2019, though acquisitions have not yet closed for that calendar year. Quirk would like to get their publishing mix up to 25% graphic novels.
