August sales charts are here, presented courtesy of Prana: Direct Market Solutions, Manage Comics, and Comic Shop Assistant. Numbers are based on data from 80,000+ consumers and 600+ stores in various markets. They reflect units sold, but also a dollar share chart, and per-store average sales data is included in the overall sales chart.

This will come as a big shocker but Absolute Batman #23 was the top book for the month – averaging 97 copies per store. Absolute and/or Batman took the top five slots, with AbWW and another Batman book also in the Top 10. But Marvel punched back this month, with Queen in Black #1 coming in at #6 and Spider-Man and Miles Morales also charting.
This led to Marvel staging a comeback in units market share, up from 31% in July, and DC making a corresponding 2% drop.
Dollars show a similar story – this chart is percentage based unlike last months which had a dollar amount.
While I don’t have any sneaky leaks to run comparative numbers this time out, I do have a chart showing market shares for the top six publishers since these charts started coming out – after the steady top 6 things move around a lot.
As you can see, Image is fairly steady month after month.
I should note that I am not a data analyst by trade, and I do not excel at Excel. I will however figure out a way to show trends graphically in a useful way as we go on – perhaps by enlisting someone who actually knows how to do it. And once again, these are still only estimates, although we have more data points to draw from.
Before we get to the top 400, here’s another one of my special charts, showing the Top 20 titles for NON Big Two publishers, and then the position of the top title for each publisher beyond that. Energon stuff continues to do very well, and Ben 10 from Dynamite hovers just outside the Top 20 overall, while IDW had a hit with Hello Kitty. After coming in at the top 10 and more than 300K units last month, Terminal #2 is at #53. Mega Man X also does well in print, and Prana’s own Comics The Magazine comes in at #142
