The character of Michael Holt, better knonw by his superhero moniker Mr. Terrific, is set to make his big screen debut this July in the much-anticiapted Superman film played by actor Edi Gathegi. As noted by filmmaker James Gunn in a post on Instagram, yesterday marked the anniversary of the character’s first appearance in comics. So it seems rather fitting that DC has released a preview of Mr. Terrific: Year One, a six-issue comic book miniseries revisiting the character’s origin.

Arriving Wednesday, May 28th, the creative team of Mr. Terrific: Year One includes writer Al Letson, with art by Valentine De Landro, with additional art on present-day sequences by Edwin Galmon, colorist Marissa Louise, and letterer Lucas Gattoni.

Here’s how the publisher describes the miniseries

Brilliant young inventor Michael Holt’s life was destined for greatness…yet everything screeched to a halt when his wife Paula and unborn son were killed in a car accident. The Holts once shared ambitious dreams of using their technology to help others, but after the tragedy, Michael retreats from society and sells Holt Industries to mysterious and craven tech billionaire Athena Prescott.

The domino effect of Michael’s actions set off an explosive chain of events that take a not-so-ordinary man from the depths of despair to the heights of heroism! Meanwhile, in the present day, Mr. Terrific continues his research into what became of Darkseid after the events of the DC All In Special…and comes to realize that his past and the present might be inextricably linked…

Created by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake, Michael Holt made his first appearance in the pages of 1997’s The Spectre #54. Since assuming the identity of Mr. Terrific, Holt has been a regular member of the Justice Society, as well as leading The Terrifics, DC’s equivalent of the Fantastic Four. Terrific is currently running field operations for the Justice League Unlimited. Before the Superman film, character has appeared in television and animation such as the Justice League Unlimited animated series and the live-action Arrow television show.

Mr. Terrific: Year One is the first full-length DC work from poet and playwright Al Letson, a graduate of DC’s Writers Workshop. It’s the latest DC project from Valentine De Landro, whose previous work includes art chores on Black Manta and Cyborg, which also featured work by artist Edwin Galmon.

Letson teased what readers can expect saying:

“I was really focused on bringing Michael’s life to a full-circle moment,” said Mr. Terrific: Year One writer Al Letson. “I don’t want to give too much away, but I wanted the stories about Mr. Terrific and the wider DC Universe to build to a moment where looking back at Michael’s past was necessary to understand the present.”
