Unless you were living under a rock this summer (which to be fair, is probably a good hiding place from a Xenomorph as it’s far away from space), Alien: Romulus had been a smashing sensation for both the Alien franchise and Disney (who owns it thanks to the Fox buyout). Befitting then that a new prequel one-shot comic entitled ALIEN: ROMULUS #1 has been announced for release on October 16th, written by Zac Thompson and drawn by Daniel Picciotto.
The new issue sheds light on the tragic events that occurred on the space station Renaissance before Rain, Andy, and their crew had their own alien encounter on the derelict spacecraft. Much like the original film, this is a tale about survival against a great unknown threat – rife with body horrors and gooey Xenomorphic encounters.
“The Alien franchise is responsible for my lifelong love of body horror, so needless to say, I’m ecstatic to be contributing a small piece to the canon,” Thompson shared in a statement from Marvel. “Working with Fede Alvarez to craft a prequel to Alien: Romulus was a genuine dream come true and a responsibility I don’t take lightly. The result is a thrilling, terrifying story that slowly gestates into something wholly unpredictable.”
The comic is being made close collaboration with the filmmakers including director Fede Alvarez. If that weren’t enough, it seems Marvel’s strategy of focusing on their newly licensed 20th century fox properties is finally going full swing, especially regarding their open usage of featuring the Predator and Alien franchises into the Marvel comics line.
The successful ALIENS VS AVENGERS comics that are happening right now – which reunited Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic – has had extremely positive reception. There were also the comics seeing Predator fight Wolverine, and more recently, Predator battle Black Panther – so there’s no shyness here about Marvel’s doing.

On sale October 16, ALIEN: ROMULUS #1 is written by horror master Zac Thompson (Absolute Carnage: Avengers, I Breathed a Body) and drawn by rising star Daniel Picciotto (Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider, X-Force). The film took “Alien” storytelling back to its roots with a thrilling saga of young space colonizers coming face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Marvel’s one-shot will take place prior to the events of the film, providing an illuminating backstory behind the film’s main threat. Made in close partnership with Director Fede Alvarez and frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues, both of whom wrote Alien: Romulus, the one-shot adds a new layer to one of the biggest film releases of the year.
