During the Pokémon Company’s 30th anniversary Pokémon Day livestream on Friday, February 27, it announced a brand new set of games. Pokémon Wind and Waves will release on Nintendo Switch 2 next year, offering three new starters and a new corner of the world for players to explore.

In the brief trailer shown during the Pokémon Day stream, full-color sketches of various Pokémon in an actual sketchbook led into a Pikachu greeting two additional Pikachus—one male and one female—dressed in their tropical vacation best. Then, the camera panned over a tropical paradise to show trainers interacting with various Pokémon in the wild.

But the camera didn’t just pan over land. It also went underwater, potentially indicating that—for the first time—players will be able to catch water Pokémon by going beneath the surface, rather than fishing for them from land.

The Pokémon Wind and Waves trailer also revealed perhaps the most important component of any new mainline Pokémon title: its starters.

The three new starters for Wind and Waves are Browt, a grass chick; Pombon, a fire dog; and Gecqua, a water reptile. All three are, frankly, adorable.

Fans have been speculating for some time about Generation 10, and today’s livestream confirms the name and theme of the game as predicted by a large portion of the fandom.

Now the question is whether the Pokémon Company will attempt another open-world style game after the disastrous releases of Scarlet and Violet, which were panned for feeling too empty, and/or if it will return to turn-based combat over the live fighting of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Stay tuned for more news about Pokémon Wind and Waves.
