Yesterday, The Leftovers and LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof posted a mysterious photo to his Instagram.

Day One.

Look familiar? If the boots and inscription don’t ring a bell, perhaps it’s time to pull out your copy of Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen again and flip to chapter eight.

Indeed, this is the statue that Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl, was presented with at his retirement. It would later also become the weapon used to murder him. And in that brutal finality comes final confirmation that HBO’s long-rumored Watchmen TV show is in official production, with Lindelof captioning the photo “Day One.”

Production details on the series beyond this remain sparse. No actors have been attached to any roles and a release date is nary in sight. An article featuring a quote from Dave Gibbons yesterday, however, seems to indicate that the series artist has not been kept current the development of this new television adaptation.
