David Mazzucchelli’s Batman Year One Artist’s Edition is due out this August, presenting a big new gorgeous book for anyone who (like me) wants a new version of this all-timer for their bookshelves.

But I’m apparently not alone in my fervor for this one. Today, IDW Publishing — which is putting this new Year One Artist’s Edition out — posted a trailer for the book, in which Hellboy creator Mike Mignola talks about Mazzucchelli’s masterwork and what makes this such an inspiring masterpiece.

“It’s very easy for me to say this is my all-time favorite Batman comic,” Mignola says in the video. “…It’s just brilliantly paced, it’s brilliantly drawn. We come from the same school of pairing your stuff down and making it as solid and readable as possible, and that’s one thing I think that Batman: Year One has in spades.”

It’s a fun little bit of promo, in which one of comics all-time greats gets viscerally excited about another, pointing out the very small things that make the work as a whole so engaging.

The new book was apparently designed by David, who worked with Chip Kidd on it.

The collection clocks in at a healthy 14 X 21, which is the same size as most of the pages were originally drawn. In addition, there’s a new intro by Mazzucchelli, as well as a presentation of his original layouts, which  provide a glimpse into his process.

The book is due out in August, and you can check out the new cover artwork for it below…
