Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m french, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my «are you ready for 2017 Angouleme prize ceremony jokes ?» country.
This month could be seen as a little let down for Marvel. It’s not. Yes, no new episode of the Civil Ward main series has been released, but a good chunk of the last All New Wave of titles are performing extremely well : Dr Strange, Black Panther, Moon Knight, The Punisher, the new volume of Daredevil, and, less surprisingly, Spider-Man /Deadpool. The two biggest disappointment in sales are probably International Iron Man and, to a lesser extent, Black Widow. So far, Deadpool and Spider-Man are the biggest franchise at Marvel, with a huge difference in TPB sales. The Spider-Man franchise has already been diluted too much, but that doesn’t seem to have affected the sales of the main title, still very strong after many years with Dan Slott at his helm. There is the first glimpse of a weakened Deadpool line with the mixed results of the new Mercs for Money ongoing title in floppy format.
Today, almost any garbage with a n°1 painted on it is gonna sell so it’s not a surprise to see DC doing so well on its first month, especially with double shipping titles mostly focused only on their big name franchises. What is more worrying for Marvel is, so far, DC’s quite good reduced fall from issue#1 numbers. We had been used to at least -45% to -60% fall from issue#1 numbers those last two years. Could DC prove that those fall can be reduced and go back to something a little more rational ?
Another worrying factor we can see, but this time in this month’s Marvel numbers, is the almost non-existent effect that the Civil War tie-in tag has on secondary or tiers series : some of them are reaching their lowest sales level with this tag !
But there is also reasons to cheer for Marvel in this month’s numbers : all the Annuals released are selling at the same level than the ongoing title they are an extension of ! A surprising result, especially since , frankly, the appellation Annual has no meaning anymore. Any random one shot can fit it.
Last but not least : this month theme for variant covers war Tsum Tsum, those ball shaped furry versions of MU characters. Cute and furry, here is something at last worth to be celebrated !
Reminder: these sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situated in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.
Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

Sorry I missed issue#15 last month, back with reorder in August. God, this is confusing. Issue#15 jump is because of MJ’s putting on the Iron Spider costume. But why on Earth issue#16 doubled in sales, I don’ t know, probably a special deal mixed with the expectation of a second Clone Saga ? (well, a third, if you count the original classic). Anyway, no matter what, the result is that people are still way responsive to anything happening in Amazing, which remain on the podium of the best selling MU titles.

That’s a confirmation of last month worrying behavior. Even losing 5K per month, it would take one year for this title to be in disapointing sales territory, but still, it seems like a kind of frenziness is over. Not that you would see it looking at the TPB sales, still going up. 37K copies of Vol. 1 sold throught US comics shops so far !

Already below Darth Vader. If every #1 will still attract buyers interests, it’s quite a trial to find a big crowd of loyal readers after that. Hey, it’s still better than 95% of the MU titles but launching a new Star Wars ongoing title isn’t sparkling people’s interest like before.

Reorder activity on issue#15 make it look uglier than it is but it’s clear that being a CV2 tie-in -but is it really, or is it simply an automatic gimmick by Marvel?- didn’t affect the title trajectory that much.

As we draw closer to the movie release, sales have to chance to remain steady, if not to go up a little, as stores could expect some fools would dare open a comic featuring the original character of a movie they liked. Yeah, that could happen. Scary, I know.

Start of a new arc, with one variant cover, but with no reward. But the sales level of the Annual is really something to cheer for, equal to the ongoing’s. Please note that this Annual is cowrote by Roger Mc Kenzie, who wrote fantastic episodes of Daredevil in 1981, eclipsed by the following success of Frank Miller’s. He has recently wrote short horror stories for the anthology The Creeps.

Bengal played a tribute to the iconic JG jones Wonder-Woman/Batman Hyketeia cover. Which made me notice that Cap America no longer has his little wings on his helmet. When did that happened and was there any explanation about why those wings were there in the first place ? An Annual has also been released this month, selling at the same level than the ongoing, which is a true performance.

What’s the point of having a double shipping serie if you can’t even keep a monthly schedule?Only one issue was scheduled for this month and it did not even shipped in time. There is probably a lesson to be learned here but seeing that sales numbers will not be affected by this, don’t expect Marvel to give a care. Issue # 0,1 & 3 are coming back with quite significative reorder activity. Expect issue#2 reorders to show their face soon, because that’s almost 40K people who bought issue#3 whithout buying issue#2. Oh, yeah, but that’s the issue where this big character « dies ». Old tricks always work…

With 3 more issues to go, we probably have a winner for the lowest modern Marvel title.
Thanks for reading until the end! I hope to see you next time. Meanwhile, feel free to comment, express your rage or your love for french sarcasm! I’ll hug everyone, no matter what. And made crêpes for you if you are hungry.
And still no previous sales numbers for Moon Knight, Punisher and Black Widow. It’s hard to really say whether Black Widow is truly a disappointment or not if we cannot see how the previous series was selling.
Yep, that’s for next month analysis. This colum was already ready and send whenever this was pointed in last month comment section.
The previous Black Widow serie was selling lower, but not with such a prestigious and famed artistic team.
Gotcha~
What about Punisher and Moon Knight? Are they selling better or worse vis a vis their previous incarnation?
Pourquoi the big jump in CV II Choosing sides #5 – 43,768 (+39.1%) ? Why, Trudeau-mania part le deux of course. Look it up, it is totally still a thing even a year after becoming our Prime Minister! I wouldn’t be surprised if half of that increase was attributable to additional purchases in the Great White North – although the love for the OTHER Canadian Justin does seem to be a worldwide phenomenon! Slap Justin Trudeau on the cover, have him slap Tony Stark around in the story (even his dad never got to throw a punch way back in Uncanny X-Men #120), and voila – a masterpiece! ;)
On the other hand, Americans might not have glommed on as much of late, what with their Presidential candidates eating up all kinds of media bandwidth (well one much more than the other for obvious and deserving reasons) in their flaming car wreck of an election!

> Falling under 15K will make everyone wonder : what if it would have released by Image ?
Presumably that wasn’t an option, since Immonen is, I think, Marvel exclusive and Icon theoretically exists for Marvel exclusive creators to do creator owned work.
And given that JUPITER’S LEGACY is selling even worse, at Image and with Frank Quitely (a bigger name, though in my opinion an inferior artist), I think maybe the bloom is off the Millar rose. Although I’m sure REBORN will do well for the first few issues, with the combination of Capullo and multiple covers. If he ever actually realizes his oft-promised oft-delayed plan to publish sequels to his earlier books with other creators, I’ll be curious to see how low they can go.
@BobH
Jupiter Legacy lose most of its steam (and reader base) with the first volume, with many several months between issues. The secondo volume being a sequel I think it’s inevitable it has that sales. Most people has ended buying the collection of the first volume and will buy the collection for the second too.
Hello Xavier,
Captain America (Steve Rogers) lost his wings with the new costume for the relaunch.
These wings were related to Mercure like the Flash One.
Hi,
Great round up as usual! Appreciate the hard work put into these.
Couple of questions if I may:
1) X-Men 92 – “Did Marvel cancelled this one too soon” – I can’t find anything saying this title has been cancelled?
2) How does the maths work for the “Average +%TPB sales issues [x] – [y]” statistic? I thought it was just total TBD sales divided by the sum of the sales of the issues it collects, but that doesn’t work out for me?
CC
“Issue#15 jump is because of MJ’s putting on the Iron Spider costume. But why on Earth issue#16 doubled in sales, I don’ t know, probably a special deal mixed with the expectation of a second Clone Saga ?”
Actually, it may have indeed a special deal. There was article on Bleeding Cool regarding the comic book sales estimates for August 2017. In the comments section of that article, a poster going by the handle fffcomics, stated they were a comic book retailer, and that Marvel offered him and other comic book retailers the following discount incentive:
“Exceed 200% of your total orders of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 (MAY160828) with your orders for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16 (JUN160844) placed by the current FOC of Monday, 7/18/2016 and you will receive an extra XX% discount off your total invoiced quantity of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16 for all orders received by the FOC.”
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/09/18/marvel-only-has-three-comics-in-the-top-30-comics-sold-in-august-2016/
Which of course means if you’re a comic book retailer, and you’re told you’ll pay less on your order for ASM #16 on the condition that you double your order for ASM #15, you’re going to order a massive amount of copies of ASM #16, too. Of course, whether you;ll actually sell all those copies of ASM #16 you ordered is another story.
Thanks a lot Mike, that would clarify everything! You’re great!
@SCARCE – Xavier Lancel — Thanks! Glad I could help.
