Although it’s long been obvious that MacGuffin, the excellent comics shop that specialized in graphic novels located in Newport News, VA had closed, no one had really gotten the details from owner Sam Hobart. However a letter is making the rounds with a bit more info and news of a sale:

As you may already know, MacGuffin was forced to close our doors in early May as a result of a dispute with the property owner. I would like to apologize for the manner in which we closed, particularly the lack of any notice.

Unfortunately, the closing was not our decision and we were forced to deal with closing itself and the fallout on the fly. Having finally settled most of the issues surrounding the store’s closing, we are ready to move forward. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances under which we closed and the two month hiatus since, we will not be able to re-open.

We will, however, be having something of a going out of business sale this weekend. A friend of the family has generously allowed us to use their storefront this weekend July 14-15 (Sat and Sun) and everything will be at least 60% off and everything including store fixtures and office furniture will be for sale.

The sale will be at:
532-D Hampton Hwy in Yorktown, VA at the corner of Victory and Hampton Hwy.
The sale will run Sat 9-5 and Sun 10-2.

We appreciate the support that you have shown and I would personally like to thank every one of you for providing me the opportunity to live out a dream.

As this is short notice, we would be happy to make arrangements if you are unable to attend the sale but are still interested in some of our merchandise (and please forward this e-mail to anyone who may be interested).

Thank you again and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

  1. That’s a real shame. They were hands-down the best comic shop in the area–I always made a point to drop by when I was visiting family. It’s a real loss for the Virginia Peninsula.
