We hear that while Japanese directing sensation Takashi Miike was at NYCC to promote the premiere of YATTERMAN, all he could do was tell everyone within ear shot how he’d like to do a live-action version of AFRO SAMURAI, the cult anime about a wandering samurai in a savage retro-future. I guess you could say he was stumping for the job.

What do you think, fans? Could Miike get this right?

  1. He could get this right only if Sam Jackson gets to play Ninja Ninja. After watching AFRO SAMURAI: RESURRECTION recently, I can’t see anyone else doing the role justice.

  2. Miike has a track record of vastly improving the source material he adapts (such as MPD Psycho), so even if he gets it wrong, he’ll get it wrong in the best way possible.

  3. He should do it, yeah ! I must admit I’ve never watch Afro Samurai but from what I know of the plot, Miike could turn this into a good movie with his own twist.

  4. Miike is the most talented, fascinating director working today. He could make an X rated Cap’n Crunch movie with a disposable Walmart camera, and it would be the most brilliant film of that year.

  5. Call me a late bloomer – but Afro Samurai is absolutely tits up the most brilliant piece of anime I’ve ever seen. My dad bought it for me for X-mas, and I was skeptical about watching it, but once I started, it was like, lo and behold, a vision quest. I can’t wait to watch the sequel sometime this weekend!

I don’t think it should be made into live-action, though.

  6. I think a live-action adaptaion would be cool. But how much would it cost v.s make? Anime has a large overall audience but most anime watchers have a very selective taste. I just don’t think that Afro Fans would be able to support such a project in ticket sales. Most of my friends don’t even know what Afro Samurai is.
