DC’s Free Comic Book Day offerings are expanding, with the addition of the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Comic Book Tie-In. The book, written by Ivan Cohen (Beware the Batman), with art by Paul Lee (Batman: Under the Hood), is a promotional item for the upcoming video game of the same name, and will be released in comics stores and on the DC Universe Infinite app on Saturday, May 2.

The comic’s story, titled “The LEGO Batman Returns,” will follow a day in the life of the Caped Crusader after returning to Gotham City from a brief hiatus. Back home, he “encounters a variety of familiar DC characters, paying homage to the Dark Knight’s history in media, with references to past films, television shows, and comic books, combined with signature LEGO humor.”

Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC, and LEGO timed the announcement with the anniversary of Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27, which was released on March 30, 1939. Per the press release, the first panel of the comic will recreate Bob Kane‘s cover art of the Dark Knight swinging over Gotham City’s skyline, in “one of several nods to DC lore sprinkled within.”

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a new origin story for Batman inspired by every film version to date (including the 1989 film, whose Prince soundtrack will be included), and will be released on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on Friday, May 22. Fans who pre-order the Deluxe Edition will receive 72-hour early access on May 19. Anyone who pre-orders will receive a Dark Knight Returns Batsuit at launch. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will released later in 2026.

Additionally, fans who sign up for a WB Games account will also be able to unlock a skin based on Bob Kane and Bill Finger‘s original design. Owners of the Batman logo LEGO set will also be able to unlock a gold Batsuit, and in-game versions of the Batmobiles from The Batman, Batman v Superman, and Batman & Robin will be available to those who have the LEGO sets of those vehicles too.
