John Ridley’s The Other History of the DC Universe now has a release date, an artist, and a list of characters to be featured in its stories.

The five-part series, which is part of DC’s Black Label imprint, will make its debut Jan. 30, with Alex Dos Diaz on art for the first issue, DC announced Monday. What’s more, the series will be ‘largely prose-driven’ with a rotation of artists. The book’s first issue will follow Jefferson Pierce, who later becomes Black Lightning, with future installments to star Karen and Mal Duncan, Tatsu Yamashiro, and Renee Montoya. It’s a promising list of characters for a series that aims to look at famous events in the DC Universe through the perspectives of superheroes that come from traditionally marginalized groups.

Ridley is perhaps best known as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave. He’s also no stranger to comics, having written the critically-acclaimed The American Way series, which was also published by DC.

The Other History of the DC Universe will be published in Black Label’s over-sized prestige format. The series was first announced in January.

Full PR from DC follows:

12 Years a Slave is an Oscar-winning examination of the horrors of slavery. THE AMERICAN WAY is one of best superhero stories of the last 25 years. On January 30, 2019, the brilliant writer behind both of them, John Ridley, returns to DC with the debut issue of THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE, a highly original new series that will be published under DC Black Label.

The Other History of the DC Universe isn’t comics as usual. In fact, it’s a largely prose-driven series that will be supplemented with breathtaking illustrations by a rotating team of star artists. The Other History of the DC Universe will look at notable events from DC Universe history through a different perspective, telling the equally vital stories of heroes who have been there throughout the DCU’s past, but come from different disenfranchised groups.

The first issue will focus on none other than Black Lightning, with cover and interior illustrations by Alex Dos Diaz. Written by JOHN RIDLEY
Art and cover by ALEX DOS DIAZ

Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Let It Fall) examines the mythology of the DC Universe in this compelling new miniseries that reframes iconic moments of DC history and charts a previously unexplored sociopolitical thread as seen through the prism of DC Super Heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups.

This unique new series presents its story as prose by Ridley married with beautifully realized color illustrations from a selection of exciting illustrators and comics artists. Alex Dos Diaz provides art for #1, which follows the story of Jefferson Pierce, the man who will one day become Black Lightning, as he makes his way from being a young track star to a teacher and, ultimately, to his role as a hero.

Future issues focus on characters such as Karen and Mal Duncan, Tatsu Yamashiro and Renee Montoya.

Extensively researched and masterfully executed, THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE promises to be an experience unlike any other. You may think you know the history of the DC Universe…but the truth is far more complex. THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE isn’t about saving the world—it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.
