Despite what certain factions on the internet will have you believe, the new Superman film from writer/director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn was an unequivocal success. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn mentioned that he had finished the treatment for the next installment for his Superman Saga teasing he would be going into production soon. Sure enough, Gunn took to social media to post an image drawn by DC publisher and comic legend Jim Lee announcing that the Superman sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, will be arriving on July 9, 2027.
In addition, actor David Corenswet who plays the titular character also posted an announcement accompanied by an image drawn by Jorge Jiménez, as did Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult post an image drawn by Mitch Gerads. All art images depict Superman and Luthor Luthor sporting his iconic green and purple battle armor, so it’s tempting to assume the sequel will involve Luthor taking Superman on himself this time around instead of simply using an Ultraman proxy.
The fact that we’re getting a Superman sequel this soon is pretty impressive. Typically, you would expect three years minimum for a quality superhero movie sequel. However, given Gunn’s track record and his ability to produce high quality work with such quick turnaround, I have no doubt he’s pulling out all the stops. His approach is definitely emphasizing quality over quantity, in contrast to what has befallen Marvel Studios in recent years.
Before the return of the Summer of Superman, next year it’s the Summer of Supergirl with actress
Milly Alcock playing the Maiden of Might in her own solo film hitting theaters on June 26, 2026. In addition, there’s the upcoming
Lanterns television series as well as the Clayface film starring
Tom Rhys Harries that has already begun filming. And of course, we shouldn’t forget the
Dynamic Duo animated feature. While certain projects such as the
Waller television series and
The Authority film may have stalled, when all is said and done, the future is looking bright for the new direction of DC Studios.
