Italian newspaper Il Messaggero and other outlets report artist Jacopo Camagni has died, following complications from heart surgery. He was only 48 years old. Best known for his work on various titles at Marvel, including Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, and X-Men Red, Camagni was also the co-creator of the modern witchcraft series Nomen Omen, which ran at Image Comics from 2019 to 2021.

Born in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, on December 21, 1977, Camagni made his debut in 1998. His earliest credits in his home country included Lupin III Millennium, a graphic novel series created in collaboration with original Lupin the Third cartoonist Monkey Punch. He made his Marvel debut in 2008 on the Marvel Adventures range, working on younger-skewing titles like Skrulls vs. Power Pack and Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil.
Subsequent work, on the main Marvel Universe books, included but were not limited to Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe (2013), Hawkeye vs. Deadpool (2014), Deadpool the Duck (2017), X-Men Blue (2018), Strikeforce (2020), Captain Marvel, Marvel’s Voices: Pride, S.W.O.R.D. (all 2021), X-Men Red (2023), Scarlet Witch & The Vision and the Scarlet Witch (2024-2025), and Generation X-23 (2026).
Non-Marvel work, besides Nomen Omen, consisted of The Pride (2014), Bronze Age Boogie (2019), The Old Guard: Tales Through Time (2021), and Dylan Dog Color Fest (2023). In addition to his interior work, Camagni provided many variant covers. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he contributed to a line of Star Wars Pride Month covers in 2021, specifically a Bounty Hunters #13 variant featuring the bisexual Alphabet Squadron character Yrica Quell.

Javier Garrón stated Camagni was “an immense artist, a titanic talent, a good man and a dear, dear friend. Treat yourself with one of his many superb comics. From his superhero work in Marvel to his graphic novels. Everytime you enjoy his art makes him stay longer with us.”
Nomen Omen writer Marco B. Bucci shared (in Italian), “I need time to find what I really want to say,” but thanked fans who offered their condolences, writing, “Every message, voice and call is full of the affection and admiration you feel for him. Thank you.”
Steve Orlando, who wrote the Scarlet Witch series Camagni worked on, said he was “a great collaborator, artist, creator, and energy at all times.” Captain Marvel‘s Kelly Thompson stated, “He was an incredible talent. Our silly CM arc is but a tiny footnote in his fantastic, interesting career, cut far too short. I’m honored to have gotten the chance to work with him.”
Camagni’s final works for Marvel, Generation X-23 #2-4, are set to be released respectively on March 25, April 29, and May 27. Another series with Marco B. Bucci, Simulacri, has been released by Sergio Bonelli Editore, but does not have an English release at the time of writing. You can check out more of the work he did on his ArtStation page.
