By Matthew Murray

The top “indie” book on the charts this month is a $1 issue of The Walking Dead #1. However, none of the other Image $1 books have charted either this month or last, so I’m not sure how accurate this numbers is.

Invincible Returns was the best selling non-reprint #1 of the month, and led to a substantial increase for the regular issue of Invincible as well. While Turf #1, also from Image, was the highest launch of the month.

Image had a 4.26% unit share, and a 3.96% dollar share, Dark Horse had a 3.82% unit share and a 4.88% dollar share, IDW had a 3.41% unit share and a 3.92% dollar share. Dynamite fell to a 2.38% unit share and a 2.33% dollar share.

I’ve listed every “indie” title in the top 200, every title from Image, Darkhorse, and IDW, and a selection of others.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which can be found here.

15. Image Firsts (Image)

03/2010: Walking Dead #1 - 24,333 [83,485]
04/2010: -

The chart says this sells another 59,152 copies this month, however not a single one of the other Image Firsts titles have made the chart in the last two months, so I’m not sure how accurate this number is.

27. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

04/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #2 - 96,409
04/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #13 - 83,580

=====
05/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #25 - 58,740 (-3.6%)

				6 month (-8.6%)
				1 year (-24.6%)
				2 year (-45.1%)
				3 year (-52.4%)

Standard drop, the reveal of the “big bad” hasn’t made any real difference.

61. Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet (Dynamite)

03/2010: Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet #1 - 54,122
03/2010: Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet #2 - 32,866 (-39.3%) [36,004]
04/2010: Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet #3 - 29,552 (-17.9%)

It only drops one place on the chart this month, but the numbers show a larger drop. There are also 9 covers, while issue 2 _only_ had 8. Meanwhile issue two shows up at number 290 on the chart with reorders of 3,138.

Returns is running pretty late, and was supposed to be out in February. It cost $3.99 so its increase is impressive despite the four different covers. I believe issue 71 only had the one cover.

102. Star Wars Purge (Dark Horse)

11/2009: Star Wars Purge – Seconds to Die - 20,371
12/2009: -
01/2009: -
02/2009: -

This arc ends with #17, and I kind of doubt the series will be coming back after that.

				1 year (-19.7%)
				2 year (n.a.)
				3 year (-34.7%)
				4 year (-23.1%)
				5 year (-57.0%)

About where we’d be without the variant cover last month.

114. Green Hornet Year One (Dynamite)

03/2010: Green Hornet Year One #1 - 21,330
04/2010: Green Hornet Year One #2 - 16,355 (-23.3%)

Issue one had eight covers, this one only has four, so that’s actually a pretty good drop for a second issue.

124. Turf (Image)

04/2010: Turf #1 - 14,033

There are four covers here, and according to an interview with the writer the first printing of 20,000 copies sold out at the distributor level. That would however include sales to the UK, which I think would be quite strong as the writer, Jonathan Ross, is quite well known there.

127. Chew (Image)

06/2009: Chew #1 - 5,248 [13,517]
07/2009: Chew #2 - 6,735 (-24.6%)

09/2009: Chew #4 - 12,294 (-10.7%)
10/2009: Chew #5 - 13,498 (+9.8%)
11/2009: Chew #6 - 13,139 (-2.7%)
12/2009: Chew #7 - 12,902 (-1.8%)

04/2010: Chew #10 - 13,335 (+3.6%)
				6 month (-1.2%)

Up again! A new story arc starts next issue, so I predict another rise in sales. Meanwhile sales of the first trade paperback have slowed down, with only 836 being sold this month, which brings the total to 13,514. There was also a $1 reprint of issue one, but that hasn’t shown up on the chart for some reason.

128. Kato Origins (Dynamite)

04/2010: Origins of the Ninja #1 - 13,172

Four covers, and I’m a little surprised this Green Hornet spin off did so well.

129. GI Joe (IDW)

04/2005: GI Joe #42 (Devil’s Due) - 20,860

==========
Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to the direct market. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK. They are low.

Matthew Murray really likes (vegetarian) cooking and zines and comics. Now if only he could somehow combine them.

  1. What’s up with “176. Transformers Last Stand of the Wreckers (IDW)”? You list the most recent issue as “standard drop” and show a percent decline, but the sales numbers look like they’re going up?!? What am I missing?

  2. I’ll be interested to see how much (if any) hit “The Boys” takes when the price goes up to $3.99.

(Which I was hoping wouldn’t happen, but I’m wondering if it hit some sales trigger such as below 24K copies and that automatically triggered a price increase…)

  3. Wow….the 1 year drops for the GI Joe series are really ugly. Makes me wonder why they are expanding the line, even with different continuities.

  4. Really sorry to see the drop in Dark Horse’s The Guild. Very interesting – I even gave copies to my daughter and her friends.
And I was really impressed by TURF- what a fun ride that book is!

  5. It’s a real shame that more people aren’t aware of the wonderful Elephantemen series! Always has great writing and phenomenal artwork, comic book fans are really missing out!

  6. I can believe the Walking Dead $1 book charting so high and the Chew one not at all.

The Walking Dead has a proven record of bringing in new readers and keeping them, but at the same time has been going so long that some might find it intimidating to start. The cheap starting point plus the expected interest because of the TV show make this reprint a very good investment for retailers.

Chew, on the other hand, is still fairly new, and hasn’t #1 gone through multiple printings already, recently? The thinking might be that anyone interested in the singles has just had a chance at #1.

  7. “03/2010: Last Stand of the Wreckers #3 – 7,855 (+36.8%)
    04/2010: Last Stand of the Wreckers #4 – 8,133 (-3.5%)”

Is that not a 3.5% increase?

  8. Dasbender/Marc: Good catch! I’ve edited the chart. It seems to be a legitimate rise too, as both issues only have two covers.

Steve: I hadn’t realized The Boys was increasing in price. As Garth Ennis’ other series from Dynamite (Battlefields) is only $3.50 and sells much worse, my conspiracy theory side says that the increase is to subsidise comics like that.

Ed: Most comics have a fairly steep second issue drop as they’re generally ordered before issue one comes out. Issue three is when we see how well things are selling.

Christian: That’s what it says on their website!

Niels: There were also Image Firsts issues of Age of Bronze, Savage Dragon, Spawn, Youngblood, and Invincible (and a couple of others I think). Even if you think people wouldn’t want most of those, most of your arguments for TWD also apply to Invincible. And the first volume of the walking dead is only $10, hardly a wallet breaker when most comics now cost $3.99.

  9. I hope that WALKING DEAD #1 reprint figure is accurate. Having plenty of stock year-round is a brilliant “try before you buy” strategy – which is why it’s so frustrating that the other $1.00 issues from Image/Marvel/DC are selling so poorly. It seems to me that the smart strategy for retailers would be to buy 10-100 of each one and rack them next to the appropriate book collection as a cheap first taste. I’d like to know where the communication breakdown is on this: the publishers, Diamond, or just retailers not giving them a chance? I’ve bought every $1.00 issue as a customer – come on, they’re only $1.00! – and given several to friends or their kids. It’s a brilliant outreach program, and hardly anybody’s participating. Am I missing something?

A smaller drop than last month, but the overall drop in the last twelve issues isn’t pretty.

Publishers need to look at numbers like this and realize that these rediculous shipping schedules kill otherwise excellent series.

Nope, the industry is as clueless as it appears to be!

Direct market stores are mostly just Diamond catalog centers like the small town grocery/hardware store counter where you pick up your order from JC Penney to save shipping. These sales lists are a sad indictment on comics and people commenting on them often don’t see the forest for the trees. Complaining about why people don’t read more of book A is missing the point. NONE of these sell anything close to what they “should.” While the boat sinks the band plays on- gee I wonder what Hollywood movie based on an old comic is coming next…?

  12. FYI- I only realized this was out because of Matthew’s comment on the DC sales chart wall and then I had to search ‘Indie Sales April”. It isn’t available in the Sales Charts section like the DC and Marvel (and the March Indie sales) ones. My FYI has now concluded.

  13. My LCS is a chain (and the owners of mycomicshop.com) and each store seemed to get tons of the Image Firsts Chew. Anecdotal, but I wonder if Matthew’s suspicions will prove correct and its absence from the charts will be explained. I bought a copy even though I have the original, because I’m cuckoo for Chew.

  14. I’m hardly surprised the archie comics arent doing more numbers with this Josie and the pussycat dolls crossover. It’s terrible, and just screams “hey Archie’s kissing and in love with a black girl, arent we prgressive??”. When it is just crap.

The owner of my LCS just gives them to customers free of charge when they show interest in a series but are hesitant to buythe first trade. I just love how he handles that.
