After Mad Max: Fury Road premiered at Cannes in 2015, the franchise is racing back to the prestigious film festival as George Miller‘s Furiosa will debut there next May.

Will Miller brought Three Thousand Years of Longing to the festival last year to acclaim, nothing could compare to the reception Fury Road received at Cannes. The film would go on to become a smash hit with critics and audiences. As such, anticipation is high in all corners for the arrival of the prequel film focused on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa from the first film. This time, she’ll be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and moviegoers are eager for a proper look at the new installment in the Mad Max series.

The prequel began shooting in Australia last summer, but precious little has been revealed about the movie outside of leaked set photos and videos. Taylor-Joy will be joined by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke, though their roles are currently unknown. And while general audiences will have to wait a little longer before the movie hits theaters, Cannes attendees should be in for a treat.

“We kept an extraordinary memory of the world premiere of Fury Road at Cannes,” festival chief Thierry Fremaux told Variety. “It would be wonderful to welcome them again with Furiosa, especially since George Miller was a marvelous jury president in 2016. I know he’s working on the film and I hope it will be at Cannes.”

Though nothing is official yet, it seems safe to assume Furiosa will premiere at Cannes shortly before its planned wide release on May 24, 2024.
