Vault Comics is gearing up to release Beyond Real #1 on December 13. Written by Zack Kaplan, the comic takes a very unique approach to storytelling. While other books have had multiple artists on various pages, this one has a team of artists working together simultaneously, going scene for scene and moving in and out of each page collaboratively.

Artists on the book are Fabiana Mascolo, Toni Fejzula, Vincenzo Riccardi, Dennis Menheere, Jorge Corona, and Liana Kangas. Colors are from Jordie Bellaire, letters are from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and John J. Pearson delivers covers. Tim Daniel is on design.

An artist’s discovery. When struggling artist June is injured in a severe car accident that leaves her boyfriend in a coma, she begins to experience strange visual phenomena. Soon, she’s able to see that we are all actually living in a computer simulation. June must set out on a journey of possibility and peril into the metaphysical layers of the simulation to reach the world’s creator and save her true love from death.

Kaplan said in a statement:

“Simulation Theory, this odd but engaging idea that we are all living inside a sort of computer simulation, has grown in popularity in the last decade amongst scientists and the public alike. But we often think of this concept in very digital, robotic terms. With Beyond Real, we turn simulation theory on its head, and imagine the layers of life’s simulation in the most artistic and astonishing of ways. It’s a dark Neil Gaiman-esque adventure series into the unknown, it’s a thoughtful and complex character drama about navigating creativity, at times inspiring and unsettling, and it’s a love letter to artists and creatives everywhere. We’re in an inflection point for creators right now, and it’s never been more important to appreciate the challenges they face and respect their profound contributions to our experience in this little world.”

“Beyond Real offered us a rare and exciting opportunity to work with many distinct and amazingly talented artists, each with unique and dynamic styles, and unify them together across one really, really ambitious series. The collaborative process, with each artist sharing design work, building on each other’s visions, while bringing their own distinct voices and craft to elevate the comics medium – we believe readers will be blown away by the moving art and the way it comes together.”

“I couldn’t imagine a better home for Beyond Real than Vault Comics, a now standout publisher that from inception has pursued the mission to support creators, to highlight unique stories and to push the boundaries in comics. That is our vision for Beyond Real. And from everyone that has worked on this book, we are so excited for readers to join us on this mind-blowing, heartfelt sci-fi/fantasy journey and to discover just what kind of world might exist beyond.”
