Following the success of the Kickstarter campaign for a limited-edition MFKZ omnibus, Magnetic Press has released the first three volumes in a five-volume set of Guillaume “Run” Renard’s acclaimed MFKZ graphic novel series. Today, The Beat has an exclusive preview from the first volume.

MFKZ hails from Renard’s 2002 short film Mutafukaz: Operation Blackhead, which has also spawned the 2017 animated Netflix film, also entitled MFKZ, from Studio 4C directed by Renard and Shôjirô Nishimi and starring Vince Staples, Kenn Michael, Giancarlo Esposito, Michael Chiklis, Danny Trejo, and RZA

MFKZ follows the character Angelino, whose best friend and roommate Vinz’s head is a flaming skull—but that’s hardly the weirdest thing about their lives. Here’s the full synopsis for Vol. 1:

Angelino is a young loser like thousands of others in Dark Meat City. His monotonous days drag between TV, Mexican wrestling matches, crappy odd jobs, and metaphysical discussions under the stars with his buddy Vinz. A stupid scooter accident plunges him into a hurricane of unimaginable troubles, with the fate of humanity on the hook. Heavily armed men in black, gangs of all kinds, and a troop of Mexican wrestlers all collide to face off against vicious cosmic entities determined to invade the planet!

“First realized as an animated short film by Run in 2002, ‘Mutafukaz: Operation Blackhead’ established a world that grew into an entire universe of interrelated characters and conspiracies,” said Magnetic Press founder and publisher Mike Kennedy.

“The ideas grew beyond the scope of that 7-minute short, and he had no choice but to turn that massive vision into a sprawling 5-volume graphic novel series that set new heights for the medium, capturing the imagination of a hungry audience in the process,” he continued.

MFKZ Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3 are available now everywhere books are sold. MFKZ Vol. 4, which goes on sale in January 2026, and Vol. 5, which goes on sale in February 2026, are available for pre-order.
