College is wild, chaotic, and above all, very confusing, all the more so when you’re queer and navigating relationships both platonic and romantic. How Could You, written and illustrated by cartoonist Ren Strapp is a debut graphic novel where four college students are trying to figure out who they are in the world.

Every year of college is a discovery into some new form of heartbreak,” Strapp said. And it certainly is. How Could You follows four women who have experienced both love and heartbreak in four years. Molly Song, a college upperclassman, vows to get over her ex this semester after she dumped her over email. Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done when said ex is having a whirlwind romance in France during her study abroad trip. Molly and her friend Lou Kingston, who is also suffering her own share of heartbreak and is coincidentally now Molly’s ex’s current girlfriend, vow to find rebound girlfriends who has caught both Molly and Lou’s eyes.

Senior Editor Grace Scheipeter had nothing but glowing comments for the creator. “Ren has a uniquely clever way of telling a story that is full of humor, heart, and heartbreaks. But through it all, How Could You tells a story about finding yourself and staying true to who you are, no matter what college throws your way.”

How Could You is for anyone who made mistakes, who spoke unkindly, who were selfish, who lost friends, who lost themselves,” Strapp said. “It’s for people stumbling into adulthood, carrying guilt over faux pas, betrayal, and not making amends when you could. I hope this book finds you and tells you you‘re not alone.”

Released on December 17 and published by Oni Press, How Could You is out in bookstores now.
