War is coming. After nearly 20 issues of slow-burning tension between shadowy power brokers that operate on earth (IO) and in space surrounding it (Skywatch), the main actors are ready to move. A familiar set of characters, however, stands in their way…stands in their way with Authority. As Skywatch descends into IO’s territory on earth, they find themselves suddenly faced by powerful beings who’ve escaped their own experimentation camps, powerful beings who look an awful lot like Midnighter and Apollo, members of the titular team from Ellis’ last landmark go around with these characters, The Authority.

Skywatch intensifies its preparation for war, increasing its attacks on the planet. For some of these conflict zones, Skywatch’s greatest threat is not IO or conventional forces, but the people who escaped from its own experimentation camps. And the four people in London whom it knows little about, but who are preparing to take steps to alter the balance of the world…
That term, ‘non-state actor’, is one for the current times. Not sure if it adds anything good but instead might be lazy writing with an author’s own word. Still, assessing that of Ellis’s books is part of the reason to buy and read.
Warren Ellis? LAZY??? I’m shocked, I tell you, I am SHOCKED!
I’m more concerned about the slow burn than the “non-state actor.” The series has been entertaining, but not a lot has happened in 20 issues outside of moving the chess pieces around. I’m hoping the slow burn leads to an explosive conclusion.
