Marvel’s newest breakout stars are two transgender mutants: Shela Sexton, AKA Escapade, and Morgan Red. And this October, Escapade, Morgan Red, Shela’s person in the chair, and Hibbert, the BFF’s instantly lovable genetically engineered flying turtle, return in a three-issue guest arc from Charlie Jane Anders and artist Alberto Alburquerque, beginning with New Mutants #31. The arc will also feature comic strips drawn by Escapade’s co-creators, cartoonists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt!
At Stately Beat Manor, we covered Escapade and Morgan’s debut in our 2022 T4T review of Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, and we are stoked to see these two cool weirdos once again. I mean, come on, how can you not love Morgan’s power to transchocolify? And then, there is Escapade, who can instantly switch powers, attributes, locations, or possessions with anyone standing within seven feet of her (and in the cover for New Mutants #31, it appears that she will be honing her abilities so that she can switch powers with… Hawkeye? The Winter Soldier? Wolfsbane?
Together with Morgan, Escapade wanted to become a supervillain that helps people take back property that is rightly theirs from corrupt organizations and individuals. But will Shela and Morgan’s professional thievery continue now that they have been recruited by Emma Frost? This trans person, can’t wait to find out in New Mutants #31!
“I have been such a fan of everything Vita Ayala, Rod Reis et al. have been doing in New Mutants, so it was a total thrill to bring Escapade, Morgan, and Hibbert into their world,” Anders is quoted as saying in the press release. “The characters we introduced in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 took on a whole new life when they were hanging around with the New Mutants and the Lost Club, and I’ve been having unconscionable amounts of fun. And as a huge admirer of Alberto Alburquerque’s work on No One’s Rose and other comics, I was psyched to hear that he’d be bringing this tale to life. It’s going to be a wild ride!”
