Dynamite’s motion to expedite a hearing over the $509,000 they are owed by Diamond was denied yesterday. An emergency hearing to approve another emergency hearing was held but the word DENIED was stamped on the motion – pretty clear.

A hearing over the matter had previously been set for Wednesday, July 16th and that will go forward. Dynamite wanted the hearing moved up because they are now owed more than $1 million and, according to their motion, will not be able to make payroll next week.

Exactly where this leaves Dynamite is not too clear, but it is clearly not good. Until they announced a move to Lunar on June 19th, Diamond was Dynamite’s exclusive distributor to comics shops in the US, and the vast majority of their stock is currently in Diamond’s warehouse. If the announced sale of consignment stock is approved, Dynamite would have no more inventory.

Taking off my reporter hat for a moment: Dynamite is a valuable part of the comics industry and puts out a lot of good comic books and pays a lot of creators and staff. I doubt Dynamite is going to do the kind of crowdfunder sale to raise money for this – for one thing, no one could get the books, because Diamond has them and won’t pay Dynamite for them even if they ship them.

However, Dynamite is running a Humble Bundle at the moment, and it’s a good one, with 49 of their Disney comics, including Gargoyles, Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King, Darkwing Duck and more. Humble Bundle offers digital downloads of these comics for a pay what you wish price, although the more you pay the more you get. Purchasing this Humble Bundle will send money directly to Dynamite, and also supports the charity First Book, whose goal is as follows:

First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children in need. By making new, high-quality books and resources available on an ongoing basis, First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education. For more information, visit www.firstbook.org.

Purchasing this Humble Bundle gets you some excellent comics for kids of all ages at a very reasonable price, supports Dynamite in their legal battle AND helps underprivileged kids get books to read. So it’s a win-win all around as far as I’m concerned.

If that’s not your cuppa, Dynamic Forces, Dynamite’s sister company, is running a Kickstarter for a set of Pope Leo XIV trading cards. White Sox fans unite!
