Per Variety, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will voice Superman’s best friend, Krypto the Superdog, in the upcoming animated film DC’s League of Super-Pets. Directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, from a script by Stern, the feature is set for a theatrical release on May 20, 2022.

In addition to voicing one of our favorite comic book dogs, Johnson will produce the film with partners Dany and Hiram Garcia through his company, Seven Bucks Productions, alongside executive producers Patricia Hicks, Jared Stern, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and Nicholas Stoller.

With Johnson also starring as the titular antihero and erstwhile Shazam villain for the Black Adam film, slated for a July 29, 2022 release, it’s shaping up to be a DC-heavy year for the action star.

In the DC comics, Krypto is Superman’s trusty companion, and one of the few other survivors of the destruction of Krypton, the Man of Steel’s home planet. These days, the Superdog seems to be spending more time with Clark Kent’s cousin Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, but Krypto has accompanied Superman on countless adventures since his 1955 debut from creators Otto Binder and Curt Swan in Adventure Comics #210.

And while this will be Krypto’s first big-screen appearance, it won’t be the first time Krypto has appeared onscreen, having appeared in several TV shows including his own Krypto the Superdog series that aired on Cartoon Network from 2005-2006.

As for the rest of the League of Superpets, which characters will appear in the 2022 film, and voiced by whom, remains to be seen. In the comics, the Legion of Super-Pets included Krypto alongside Beppo the Supermonkey, Supergirl’s pet Streaky the Supercat, Comet the Super Horse (who isn’t technically a horse; long story), and a gooey, shapeshifting blob called Proty. But this film is about a “League” rather than a “Legion,” so DC may opt to reach outside the Super family for animals like Ace the Bathound, Wonder Woman’s giant kangaroo Jumpa, and Topo, Aquaman’s musically-inclined octopus friend.
