The new DC Festival of Heroes – The Asian Superhero Celebration anthology comic aims to do exactly what its title implies, arriving on May 11 to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
The comic book one-shot will span 96 pages, featuring work from a long list of writers and artists, including writers Gene Luen Yang, Mariko Tamaki, Minh Lê, Ram V, Greg Pak, Dustin Nguyen, Amy Chu, Alyssa Wong, among others; as well as artists Bernard Chang, Marcio Takara, Dustin Nguyen, Trung Le Nguyen, Francis Manapul, Marcus To, Sean Chen, Sumit Kumar, among others as well. The book will also include portraits by Cliff Chiang, Jim Cheung, Jae Lee, Jen Bartel, Kevin Wada, Philip Tan, and Gurihiru. It has a retail price of $9.99, with cover art by Jim Lee and Alex Sinclair, and a variant by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau.
DC Festival of Heroes features some really interesting story concepts. Ram V., for example, will unveil how the character Shoes became Catwoman’s protege, with a story that reveals her real name, origin, and parentage. This makes sense, of course, given that Ram V. is currently writing DC’s ongoing Catwoman series.
Elsewhere in Gotham, writer Mariko Tamaki — who is soon to be writing Detective Comics — is penning a new Cassandra Cain story, while Minh Lê — the writer behind the YA graphic novel, Green Lantern: Legacy — will team up with Trung Le Nguyen for a story featuring Vietnamese American Tai Pham, DC’s newest Green Lantern co-created by Lê and Green Lantern: Legacy artist Andie Tong. This marks Nguyen’s first work with DC Comics ever, with Nguyen having broken out last year with the absolutely incredible coming-of-age graphic novel, The Magic Fish.
Finally, in a story DC’s press release describes as “the main event”, Gene Luen Yang will team with Bernard Chang on a story that commemorates the month. Other shorts in the anthology will involve characters like Katana, Lady Shiva, the Atom, and New Super-Man.
