DC Comics has announced Danger Street, a new 12-part Black Label maxiseries from Tom King, Jorge Fornés, and Dave Stewart, the same team from the recently-concluded Rorschach series. No letterer was named in the announcement, but it’s a safe bet that it’s Clayton Cowles.

Danger Street
Main cover by Jorge Fornés

This new book seems (somehow) even further afield than Rorschach ended up being. Launching with Danger Street #1 on May 3, the series will run bi-monthly, and it’s billed as being poised to “plumb the depths of the DC Universe” through another “deeply layered crime drama.”

Most interestingly, it teases that it will update and reimagine “versions of some of DC’s most obscure and offbeat” super heroes, specifically those that appeared in the DC First Issue Special series in the mid-1970s, which is a comic I’ve never heard of published well before I was born (but this isn’t about me). The entire run of the book is, however, available on the DC Infinite digital comics platform, and a hardcover collection of the 13-issue series was released in 2020. Here’s the collected edition’s cover:

Check out the official description of the book — which name checks some of the heroes we can expect to see — from DC’s announcement below:

Joining the Justice League is a goal for any superhero, but what happens when a quest for membership takes a sinister turn? Join Starman, Metamorpho, and Warlord as they look to prove themselves worthy by summoning and defeating Darkseid in battle. Soon they’ll learn that calling upon a New God never ends well, and their world is headed for disaster as a result! The journey to save the day will be a treacherous one filled with princesses, knights, and all kinds of monsters. Each person the heroes encounter plays a crucial role in this sprawling yet gripping narrative that is a little bit silly, a whole lot dark, and completely cool.

Obscure heroes…summoning Darkseid for no reason other than to fight and defeat him…”princess, knights, and all kinds of monsters”…okay, you got me, I’m in. Extra points for Doctor Fate appearing in the preview artwork, which includes some interior page inks with red accents, and variant covers by Steve Rude, Lee Weeks, and Ben Oliver. You can find those below after more info from the announcement detailing the nature of the variant covers…enjoy!

Book One of this 12-issue series arrives in comic book shops and on participating digital platforms on Tuesday May 3. The debut issue features a main cover by series artist Fornés, with variant covers spotlighting characters featured in both Danger Street and the original DC 1st Issue Special series. The open to buy variant cover features Atlas, and is drawn by comics icon Steve Rude, with a 1-in-25 ratio variant by Lee Weeks featuring Starman, Metamorpho and The Warlord, plus a Dr. Fate 1-in-50 ratio variant from Ben Oliver. Check local comic book shops for details and pre-ordering.
