Crunchyroll and Adult Swim/Toonami are continuing their programming partnership with the announcement of an all-new, co-produced series: Fena: Pirate Princess. According to the surprise announcement at the first ever Adult Swim Con, the series will be a totally original IP directed by Kazuto Nakazawa (B: The Beginning, Kill Bill) and animated by Production IG, the studio behind hits including Psycho-Pass as well as Ghost in the Shell (1995).

Fena: Pirate Princess follows a young orphan girl seemingly born into slavery. And, when we meet her, she’s aiming to change that. Her and her comrades will set out to create new lives for themselves and find a place where they belong over the course of 12 episodes. The Adult Swim and Crunchyroll production doesn’t have a release date as of yet – but below we’ve got quotes from the creators, a full synopsis and a first look at character designs.

About two years ago when the Crunchyroll/Adult Swim partnership was initially announced, Crunchyroll and Toonami also announced Blade Runner: Black Lotus with Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) attached as creative producer. If Fena follows suit, English dubbed episodes will debut on Toonami, while Crunchyroll will handle global distribution.

Fena: Pirate Princess is a 12 episode original anime series that tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman. Fena has been raised on an Island where there is no hope of becoming anything more than chattel, to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: forge a new identity, free of bondage, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mysteries behind a keyword “Eden.” It is the story of a lifetime adventure she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals!

“I’m thrilled to be able to announce our next co-produced anime series with our partners at Crunchyroll and bring Nakazawa’s unique vision to life,” said Jason DeMarco, svp/creative director on-air for Adult Swim. “I hope you come to love these characters as much as I do.”

“The global anime community is going to love adventuring alongside Fena in this new series setting sail next year,” said Sarah Victor, head of development, Crunchyroll. “We’re delighted to be working alongside Adult Swim to bring this new series to life.”
