The importance of the Captain Marvel movie to one fan
Where to even start?
By Chandler Banks-- Kelly Sue DeConnick is a long time hero of mine. I met her at NYCC this year, and my heart melted when she looked me in the eyes and talked to me about the importance of non-compliance (that's a big thing in her upcoming series, Bitch Planet). She's important to me, and her characters are so dear to my heart I wear a Captain Marvel necklace every day.
Nice Art: All the new and kids titles from Boom! Studios in January
We haven't done a ton of solicitation listings at the Beat recently, but it's something we're going to start up again, because...well, look at all the nice art. Here are the #1s and the Kaboom and Boombox titles from Boom's January solicitations—new creator owned titles include Feathers, a smart looking new kids title, and Burning Fields, a caper with a burning Iraqi oil field as the setting.
Also here are all the KaBOOM titles for January with as many variant covers as have been released by some funky fresh artists like Ian McGinty, Lorena Gomez and Christine Larsen.

WHOA: Marvel announces Captain Marvel and Black Panther films and much more
WHOA -- Marvel really did announce a Captain Marvel movie for 2018, and Black Panther for 2017, with Chadwick Boseman (42) joining Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans on stage.
Today's Marvel presser was roundly liveblogged, and it was apparently a tumultuous event at the Disney owned El Capitan theater. The entire Stage 3 line-up was announced and it goes like this:
Marvel Studios announces…something at 2 PM
Marvel Studios is holding a press conference at 2 pm edt/11pdt today and you can follow along at the Marvel live blog, or Twitter or smokesignals, or whatever method you prefer.
While most guess it could be about the 'Batch being cast as Doctor Strange, it could also be about other mystery slots in the movie schedule, or it could be the Age of Ultron trailer that was supposed to officially debut tonight, or about Katee Sackhoff starring as lady Captain Marvel in Avengers 3.

Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange in the upcoming MArvel movie.
Some say he is merely "in talks" but we all know that this was fated to be, and it was doubtless some arcane spell cast by legions of Cumberphiles putting a whammy on Joaquin Phoenix—perhaps some kind of spell of confusion that made him think that playing Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel movie would not be the best thing for his career.
But now all is right with the world, and the 'Batch will play the sorcerer supreme. I mean, really, is there anyone who didn't think this was perfect casting the moment it slippied in a sigh from a Tumblr user's lips?
Marvel comics come to Kobo
Marvel collected editions are already available on iVerse, and some other digital platforms, and now, Kobo, the Canadian-based device that also offers apps for Mac, Android, and desktop. Marvel periodicals continues to be exclusive at Comixology and their own Marvel Unlimited All-you-can-ead service, but the GNs are everywhere.
What did we tell you about attempts to diversify digital distribution?
Review: ‘Action Philosophers’ is required reading
The duo of Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey have done it again in the 10th anniversary edition of their comic book series Action Philosophers. It's available in late October from Dark Horse in a beautiful hardcover one volume edition with new cover art. This smart and witty non-fiction graphic book is the introduction to philosophy that should be required reading. I wish it had been around when I struggled through some of these works!
The series originally published by Van Lente and Dunlavey under their company Evil Twin Comics began life as a single issue comic book about Frederick Niestche, he of the “God is Dead” philosophy. The comic book proved to be so popular that the guys developed a series that was eventually distributed by Diamond. For those of you unfamiliar with the industry that’s pretty impressive for an indie company. With support and appreciation from the industry the series won a Xeric Grant in 2004, was nominated twice for an Ignatz award and lauded by the American Library Association. For Evil Twin Comics they've also created Action Presidents and The Comic Book History of Comics.
