“My name is Catbug! What’s yours?!” Bravest Warriors fans, rejoice! Pendleton Ward, who created the show and wrote the first three seasons, is currently developing a solo Catbug series with Frederator Studios. They are currently shopping the new cartoon to streaming and linear networks, according to Deadline.
In addition to the new series, there will also be short-form animated videos, e-books, and webcomics about our favorite interdimensional traveler, which hopefully means exploring more of Catbug’s world(s). Although the Deadline article cites the character’s popularity with Gen Z, the Breehn Burns-created, Sam Lavagnino-voiced character has been a hit since Bravest Warriors first made its debut a decade ago.
Catbug has “become a true meme or internet culture, spurring parodies and references to his quirky lines from the show,” said Frederator CEO and Wow! Unlimited Media Chief Creative Officer Fred Seibert.
There’s no word yet on when Catbug will make his debut as a titular star of his own series, but it will surely be a hit. In addition to millions of views on YouTube and TikTok, as well as millions of loops on Giphy, the character has been immortalized in tattoos, merchandise, and more.
How can you resist a creature who’s potentially very, very old but still looks and acts and talks like a wee babe? The Internet may be all about Baby Yoda (a.k.a. Yodito) right now, but Catbug is a legend, and it’s super exciting to see him becoming the eponymous character of a new series from Ward, whose other iconic creation is Adventure Time — a.k.a. one of the best animated series of the last decade.
