The Black Hammer universe is returning for at least six more issues. Dark Horse Comics has announced Black Hammer: The End, a new miniseries from acclaimed series creator Jeff Lemire, artist Malachi Ward, and letterer Nate Piekos. The series picks up following the conclusion of last year’s Black Hammer Reborn series.
Here’s how Dark Horse describes Black Hammer: The End:
In this multi-timeline, world-hopping adventure, we find new stakes, new heroes, and the long-awaited return to Black Hammer Farm. The Weber family reunites and faces new challenges and villains in Jeff Lemire’s biggest event in the Black Hammer series thus far!
Black Hammer: The End is the next era of the Black Hammer Universe; a six-issue event series by Jeff Lemire and Malachi Ward that pulls the Black Hammer world into crisis.
Along with a main cover by Ward, Black Hammer: The End #1 will also sport a variant cover by David Rubín.
Debuting in 2015, Black Hammer was created by Lemire and artist Dean Ormston. The original twelve-issue series and its follow-up, Black Hammer: Age of Doom followed a group of former superheroes who were trapped on a mysterious farm, with Lemire playing with and subverting classic superhero comics tropes. Following the conclusion the initial farm story in 2019, the series returned as Black Hammer Reborn with Lemire joined by artists Caitlin Yarsky and the team of Ward & Matt Sheean; that twelve-issue series wrapped last year. Along with the main title, the Black Hammer universe has expanded in a series of spinoff miniseries and graphic novels.
In a statement announcing Black Hammer: The End, Lemire described how the new series builds on the existing world of Black Hammer:
“Black Hammer Reborn left the Black Hammer Universe on quite a cliffhanger,” says writer Jeff Lemire, “ and now we’ll find out what happens next! Black Hammer: The End is a story I’ve been building across the various Black Hammer books for years now. It will pull storylines, and characters, from all the various series into one massive story which will both be a conclusion of all we’ve been doing, but also usher in a fresh start, and a whole new beginning, for the Black Hammer Universe!”
