After unveiling its first wave of Superman tie-in products last month, both McFarlane Toys and Funko have debuted some more toys available for pre-order. Among the highlights is Baby Joey, a character whose exact nature and origin is still unknown but has had fans discussing online. Many have surprised it’s the son of Metamorpho who is being held prisoner by Lex Luthor in order to control his father to do his bidding.
Considering this is from James Gunn, the filmmaker who introduced the world to Baby Groot, his penchant for adorable creatures shouldn’t come as a surprise. Time will tell whether or not Baby Joey will have bigger appeal than Krypto after the film is released.
Likewise, the mysterious character seen in the trailer sporting the letter “U” is indeed Ultraman. However, even the merchandise is keeping the full details of who he is under wraps. Interesting enough, rather than offer Ultraman as his own figure, Funko produced Ultraman as a chase variant, an ultra-rare collectible randomly inserted throughout the production run, for the Hammer of Boravia. Whether or not this means some kind of connection between the two characters in the film remains to be seen.
As many of pointed out, there’s a notable absence of Hawkgirl merchandise from the film. It wouldn’t be the first time a female character is excluded from a comic book movie’s toy line such as when an executive blocked the production of Black Widow merchandise for Avengers: Age of Ultron. If I had to guess, we can likely expect Hawkgirl merchandise down the line. Case in point, Funko teased a new Limited Edition POP! that is clearly Hawkgirl.
