Welcome to my 12th and final month as your guide through Marvel’s sales numbers. Due to some career changes and advancements that my family and I have made, I can no longer write these articles. It has been fun and a great learning experience, and I thank you for joining me. But enough about me, let’s look at the monthly breakdown.

So as I was writing this article, Marvel made a big announcement about Secret Wars, and pretty much changed everything I was going to say. So I went through and altered the analysis to reflect the news that apparently the Marvel Universe as we know it is ending and possibly getting rebooted/ relaunched/ combined in some sort of new configuration later this year.
As we dig into the numbers, we’ll be looking at how the new Secret Wars news might affect the titles over the next couple months and asking lots of questions.

Spider-verse keeps Spider-Man sales above 100k. There are 4 issues left (the event is scheduled to end in February), and hopefully the sales can stay this strong for the remainder for the series. Obviously Spider-man is going to stick around after Secret Wars as it is Marvel’s best seller; however there are some aspects of continuity that they could undo or redo. Perhaps the marriage to Mary Jane will make a comeback, or even their long lost daughter will return. Spider-Verse has also introduced a lot of new popular Spider characters and it will be interesting to see where they end up.
3. SHIELD #1 12/14 SHIELD #1 - 94,503
SHIELD debuts with a strong 94k. This series introduces the Agents of SHIELD TV characters to the 616 Marvel Universe in shorter 1 to 2 issue story arcs. Keep an eye on how far it drops next month; a healthy 35 to 40% drop will keep it above 55k. It will be interesting to see how Secret Wars affects some of these newer popular series. It makes sense for something like Shield to tie-in to a world-altering event, and maybe the universe-melding will allow them to incorporate more Marvel Cinematic Universe elements.

The new Thor sits at a very comfortable 70k for issue 3. Of Marvel’s recent debuts, Thor currently has the strongest sales, and hopefully it will settle nicely between 50k and 60k, which would put it well above the 35k to 40k level of the previous Thor series. As revealed on the Secret Wars 2 cover yesterday, many Thors from different universes and timelines will be present in Secret Wars. Will the new Thor stick around after the universe-meld? These sales numbers suggest maybe it should.
7. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 12/14 Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 - 71,284
The Spider-Man annual does not tie in to Spider-Verse, but even without the support of the event the annual sells 70k which is the lowest the main Spider-Man series ever gets between events.

Axis sold well for an Uncanny Avengers issue but pretty poorly for a big event book. Even with the accelerated release schedule it dropped to half of its debut sales. The new Uncanny Avengers debuts next month. As we’ve discussed in the past, Marvel’s recent event books are slipping in the sales lately. The question is will a line-wide universe-altering event help get people interested in events again or turn them off even more?

Wolverine kicked the bucket so Spider-Man heads to the Jean Grey School to help teach the X-kids. Spidey doubles the normal sales for Wolverine and the X-Men for its debut month, but if it follows the standard issue 2 40% drop, its sales will be right back where they were very quickly. If the sales follow the recent trends for this series, I expect it will be more of a placeholder until Secret Wars changes the line-up of the x-books.
15. ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN 12/14 Angela #1 - 61,398
Angela debuts at 60k. Like most debuts the key to its success will be how big the month 2 and 3 drops are. The sweet spot seems to be between 30k and 40k for a lot of these single character books. Angela is a very interesting new addition to the Marvel universe and one I expect will even more integrated to whatever universe comes out of the back end of Secret Wars.

Slight drop for All-New X-Men this month, but it stays in its normal 55k to 60k spot that it has been living in for a while. The upcoming Guardians Black Vortex crossover should help both series boost their sales a bit in the coming months. What happens to the original time-displaced X-Men during the universe-melding should be very interesting. Which X-Men and mutants make it through to the other side will be one of the aspects of this whole event that everyone should watch closely.

Uncanny X-Men has been fluctuating between 50k and 55k for a while now and this month’s drop still keeps it in that same sales range. This series has been slowly building towards some potentially big changes in the lineups and teams of the X-universe, but will those organic changes lead to new X-books or will the end of the universe create an entire new X-men lineup?

First issue in a few months without a themed variant backing it up, and Guardians drops almost 10k copies. Luckily, there is a crossover called Black Vortex starting soon which should boost the Guardians back up to at least 60k. Expect the new Marvel Universe to have a lot of Guardians books in it, as they are now one of Marvel’s sales pillars.

The Guardians annual sells only slightly less than the main Guardians book, which is pretty good.

Issue 2 of Captain America drops a huge 70k copies, which puts it only 15k to 20k above where it was selling before the relaunch. Can the book succeed without Steve Rogers wielding the shield? Secret Wars gives Marvel multiple opportunities to bring Steve back or possibly have both a renewed Rogers and Falcap.

Avengers marches towards Secret Wars as time continues to run out. However, sales continue to drop as well. The big question on my mind is why is Marvel’s arguably biggest event yet, their reboot, spinning out of two series that aren’t best sellers? The last event to spin out of Hickman’s Avengers books started strong, but ended rather poorly. Can the size and consequences of Secret Wars overcome the lackluster sales of its lead in books? That will be the big question come May.

Spider-Woman drops half its sales for issue 2. It was launched as part of Spider-Verse instead of as a standalone, which could have been confusing for new readers who don’t read Spider-Man, but probably did help boost its launch numbers. Keep an eye on how low it drops over the next few months.

Deadpool drops to the lowest it has been in about a year. As its Axis tie-in ends, will the sales grow or fall? The April solicits suggest they are building toward Deadpool’s death in the issue 250 special, but this is Deadpool so it’s unclear if that will be a real or played for laughs. Then again, it can all be undone in Secret Wars so why not kill him?

Rocket Raccoon drops another 10k issues. It is still selling better than a lot of Marvel’s single character issues sell by issue 6.

Thanos Vs. Hulk is a four issue miniseries and will likely sell between 30k and 40k for the rest of its run.

Time Runs Out for New Avengers and sales continue to drop as well. This book leads into Secret Wars even more than Avengers, and even though the two books are one story this series sells even less. Not the strongest footing to launch your major world altering event out of, but if anyone can make it successful, it is probably Marvel.

So a helpful commenter (thanks Randy C.) pointed out that the big boost to Inhumans #8 last month was due to Marvel shipping stores extra books to cross-promote with the Agents of SHIELD mid-season finale Inhumans reveal. So these lower numbers are much closer to Inhuman’s true sales numbers. Oddly enough despite this book not selling very well at all, Marvel is adding a second Inhumans book in April. This is likely due to the importance of the Inhumans to their overall publishing and film plans. Expect Inhumans to be an even bigger part of the Marvel Universe after Secret Wars.

Secret Wars will be changing everything. This time next year, the makeup of Marvel’s publishing line may look completely different. What books do you want to see get relaunched, which books should end with the event? Do you think the x-books and the Fantastic Four will have a smaller presence to make more room for Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy? I’m hoping this is more of a “Crisis On Infinite Earths” type of deal, rather than a “Flashpoint”.
I wonder how much sales of Axis would have fallen if it wasn’t triple-shipped and retailers had been able to adjust numbers accordingly. To me, it was easily the worst “event” series since Fear Itself (if not worse than that one…)
I wonder what Marvel is going to try to do to drum up the sales on Captain Marvel before calling it a day…I have my doubts that the Black Vortex crossover is going to do much, though I’m sure the inevitable Ms. Marvel crossover will help.
I definitely hope there is some sort of thinning of the Avengers & X-Men lines post Secret Wars. I feel like titles are essential eating themselves and diluting the lines as a whole.
@Kev – The Carol Corps is certain to get a Secret Wars book because a portion of Battleworld is allocated to Captain Marvel. I could see this as the perfect opportunity to do a Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel team-up book.
It’s pretty amazing that we’re getting to the point that in the next few months it’s possible that outside of first issues both the top AVENGERS book and the top X-MEN book will both have sales under 50k in the North American direct market. I’m pretty sure either franchise sinking that low is unprecedented in the modern history of the direct market, for both to reach new lows at the same time doesn’t look good on current management. And I’m not sure how much a reboot or relaunch or whatever they’re doing will help since the architects of that will be mostly the same people bringing in these sales.
@Bob, probably Secret Wars is going to bring a decent increase and we won’t see them dropping below 50k.

Guardians 3000 drops a quarter of its sales this month. Of all the new Guardians books this one is selling the worst, perhaps it because these character aren’t as well known as the ones featured in the movie?
