Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

The biggest surprise in the December Diamond-NA comics chart is not that DC has five of the top six comics (and six of the top ten), or that DC & Marvel are in a virtual tie for market share (DC edges out Marvel for dollar share, while Marvel edges out DC for unit share), or even that DC is maintaining strong sales of both Dark Nights Metal & Doomsday Clock.

No, the biggest surprise is that Diamond has expanded to chart to include the Top 500 items, rather than just the Top 300 as has been the case for most of the chart’s modern incarnation. (Diamond briefly toyed with a Top 400 around the start of 2014, but it only lasted a handful of months before they returned to the Top 300.) John Jackson Miller over at Comichron claims that this is a permanent change, and he generally knows about such things.

It is a welcome change, in that it gives us more data. We now have sales figures for all of DC’s comics released in the month (in the past, there were almost always a handful of titles whose sales fell outside of the Top 300), and we get more re-order figures as well. For example, we never would have known that the first issue of Mystik U got an additional 584 comics sold in December if not for the expansion out to 500!

As mentioned above, there is a lot of good news in DC on the Diamond chart this month, but when you dig closer you’ll see that DC have a lot of problems right now as well: Many of the Rebirth books have dropped back down to their pre-Rebirth levels; DC insists on continuing to mount DCU mini-series for C- and D-list characters when recent examples should tell them to stop doing that!; Young Animal is suffering due (in part) to consistent lateness of its flagship title (Doom Patrol); Vertigo is dead and a toxic brand, but DC don’t seem to realize it; The WildStorm relaunch is sinking; the Hanna-Barbera books are sliding off into oblivion; and the Digital First titles don’t seem to have the pep that they used to. DC have many problems to address in the coming year, so good luck to them…

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column (there are some minor changes in the fine print this month, to further clarify a few things). We also commend to you our analysis of cumulative DC Rebirth trade collection sales.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity.)

1 – DOOMSDAY CLOCK ($4.99)
11/2017: Doomsday Clock #1 of 12 — 238,643 [261,246]
12/2017: Doomsday Clock #2 of 12 — 158,603 (- 39.3%)

A drop of nearly 40% is right on the upper edge of what is expected for a second issue, but when you consider that this issue did not have a variant lenticular cover, the drop is perfectly reasonable. If DC can keep interest up for the remaining issues, this will go down as a success (and you can expect to see more of this kind of thing in DC’s future…). And an additional 15,511 copies of the first issue show up on this month’s Diamond chart as well.

2 – DARK NIGHTS: METAL ($4.99)
06/2017: The Forge #1 — 130,651 [139,088]
07/2017: The Casting #1 — 128,261 (- 7.8%)
08/2017: Metal #1 — 261,997 (+104.3%) [284,188]
09/2017: Metal #2 — 149,487 (- 39.9%) [162,823]
10/2017: Metal #3 — 158,698 (- 2.5%) [159,655]
11/2007: —
12/2017: Metal #4 — 152,567 (- 4.4%)
—————–
6 months: + 9.7%

Case in point, the enthusiasm continues for Metal, coming back this month after its planned hiatus. Any concerns DC might have had for either Doomsday Clock or Metal eating into each other are so far allayed; instead they’ve taken their tolls further down the chart. The increase of Diamond’s monthly chart from Top 300 to Top 500 pays its first dividend, as an addition 957 copies of issue #3 show up this month. There was also a Director’s Cut of issue #1, which moved 11,252 copies at $6.99 a pop and have been rolled into the figures for that issue.

Yes, you may be concerned that Batman now looks to be firmly below the 100K mark, but I don’t think DC is terribly worried. It’s only when compared to recent years that being below 100K is disappointing; recall that immediately prior to the New 52, Batman was selling in the low 50K range. Any other comics publisher would kill to have a twice-monthly book selling this well. So no tears for Batman.

6 – BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT ($3.99)
10/2017: White Knight #1 of 8 — 86,791 [94,706]
11/2017: White Knight #2 of 8 — 69,668 (- 19.7%) [76,940]
12/2017: White Knight #3 of 8 — 72,679 (- 5.5%)

Doing really well, with first month sales for issue #3 above those of issue #2, helped no doubt by second printings of the first two issues showing up in December as well.

9 – METAL one-shots ($3.99)
09/2017: Batman Red Death #1 — 81,904 [100,831]
09/2017: Batman Murder Machine #1 — 78,202 (- 12.0%) [88,693]
10/2017: Batman Dawnbreaker #1 — 89,427 (+ 0.8%)
10/2017: Batman Drowned #1 — 89,861 (+ 0.5%)
10/2017: Batman Merciless #1 — 87,920 (+ 4.1%) [93,530]
11/2017: Batman Devastator #1 — 94,496 (+ 3.2%) [96,519]
11/2017: Batman Lost #1 — 101,267 (+ 4.9%)
11/2017: Batman Who Laughs #1 — 105,183 (+ 16.6%) [118,105]
12/2017: Hawkman Found #1 — 64,617 (- 45.3%)

When considered in the context of the Metal one-shots for previous months, Hawkman Found may be found wanting. But if you consider it as a Hawkman comic—whose last miniseries, The Death of Hawkman, finished with sales of just 13K—this is a runaway smash. Such is the power of Metal: To get people to care about a Hawkman comic! (There were also a few of the other previous one-shots that showed up on the chart this month with new printings.)

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; The International Union of Elevator Constructors; or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

  1. Link to the original column on YACB (with proper formatting) somehow got deleted; it’s at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/2018/01/dc-comics-month-to-month-sales-december.html

Also, The Beat hasn’t (yet) published the October & November columns, but you’ll find them at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/2017/11/dc-comics-month-to-month-sales-october.html & http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/2018/01/dc-comics-month-to-month-sales-november_7.html

  2. A decade ago, DC and Marvel’s trade policies were in the process of becoming more stable, as almost all ongoing series were being collected. Now, so many volumes of each character are available in trade that the ongoings really don’t seem to matter much anymore, just the big stories. For example, why should anyone care about this iteration of Supergirl over Peter David’s, or Jeph Loeb’s, or the New 52 one? I think this is where the industry is going, that mere continued serialization of well-known characters isn’t enough anymore.

The market wants more Watchmen, more Metal, more Stories That (Publishers Tell Us) Matter.

  3. So sorry, real quick, how in God’s name is a Cyborg ongoing written by Marv Wolfman an idea that got approved? Cyborg has completely failed as a solo character and Marv Wolfman hasn’t had a successful comic since, what, 1991? Why even try this?

  4. I hope Heidi uploads the earlier columns, just for history and continuity (even if they’re backdated)

Dave, I would STRONGLY urge you NOT to include “Director cuts” with the main product — they’re wholly different things (B&W art, upprice, script excerpts)

“I suspect that retailers are trimming shelf copies to make a bit more room in their budgets for either Doomsday Clock/Metal, or Marvel Legacy variants, or both.” I honestly do not believe that this is how ANY retailers order. *I* suspect that these books are just dropping on their own!

  5. @Brian: I suspect that because several of the mid-selling titles saw larger-than-standard-attrition drops; killing a shelf copy or two for a title that has been underselling in the past few months is an easy call to make to free up a little extra room in a tight budget. The reason for the drop is that they aren’t selling; the trigger is needing extra budget space. I could easily be wrong—it’s all just speculation…

  6. Given the erratic nature of variant cover artist changes, various promotions, and issue to issue variability, I would agree that the percentage change section at the end is probably not the best indicator of sales trends. Perhaps some other metric such as percent change from the last 12-month average? Or percent change of last 3-month average from the same 3-month average from 5 years ago? It seems like you are trying to capture something of how the current month of a particular title compares with various past months.

  7. hey dave, thanks as always for posting your dc sales reports – very much anticipated and always appreciated.

and hey, i’ve found a new comics website after picking up october and november at yet another, so that’s all good.

i’m one of those completist geeks who always makes it to the end of the column but never, ever, reads the eye-bleeding pages and pages of percentage data so i’ll vote to ditch that bitch and save your typing fingers for something more interesting, mate.

    best, matt
