381911_20161124141945_largeGreetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

Around these parts we sometimes act as though the sales estimates are actual sales numbers. We of course know this is not true, and those of you who read the fine print each month know that we know this is not true. These are estimates extrapolated from data provided by Diamond North America, and represent only sales to comic shops in the U.S. and Canada. Which leaves out sales through all sorts of channels, including notably the United Kingdom (where, for example, I hear that Hellblazer/John Constantine comics sell much better than their North American sales would indicate), but also newsstands and mail subscriptions.

(We use the Diamond-NA estimates because they are pretty much the only figures available to us, and because they are fairly consistent for a month-to-month analysis.)

Which leads us to MAD Magazine. Earlier this month, friend-of-The-Beat John Jackson Miller had a blog post over at his site Comichron which looked at the sales data in the most recent Statement of Ownership for MAD Magazine. The figures may come as a surprise: MAD sold an average 127,040 copies per issue in 2016. That’s actual paid circulation, not estimates. Perhaps even more surprising is that the part that is from mail subscriptions is 75,466—well over half. Which puts MAD on par with Batman for sales for DC. (The biggest question out of this is why, with those sales, MAD is only a bi-monthly?!) We don’t know that portion of that is sales through Diamond, as MAD gets classified as a magazine and our sources for sales figures don’t provide those estimates. But it’s a good reminder that what we see from month-to-month, while providing an apples-to-apples comparison, is not the whole story.

Comic sales were down across the board in November, despite it being a five week month (DC actually sold three fewer titles in November than in October). DC was part of that decline, selling about 500K fewer comics in November than in October. They were however up 700K comics sold versus November 2015, despite overall comic unit sales being down 8% from November 2015, and that’s even with not having the over 400K sales from the first issue of Dark Knight III a year ago. So even though Rebirth sales continue to trend downward—as would be expected at this stage after a line-wide relaunch—it is still bearing a good deal of fruit for DC.

Also, returnability ended this month for all of the Rebirth titles, even those that have not had three issues out yet. Which leaves the only returnable books this month being the nascent Young Animal titles.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Includes freely-orderable variant (f.o.v.) covers, as do all of the Rebirth comics. I’m not going to keep repeating this fact for all of the Rebirth titles; just assume that they’re there, and I’ll only make mention if there’s something strange or different.

Batman moves back to the top this month, two of only three comics over 100K this month (the other is Civil War II #7) and beating out several high-profile Marvel NOW launches (including Invincible Iron Man, Avengers, and Unworthy Thor).

Batman is one of the few Rebirth titles running behind its New 52 counterpart, but considering that was the Snyder/Capullo juggernaut, it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

No longer returnable, Snyder’s monthly Batman book slips below the 100K mark. But then this is a $5 book, so it’s generating more revenue than an issue of the regular Batman title. It may not be the primary Bat-book, but with Snyder at the helm it’s a close second.

7 - BATMAN ANNUAL ($4.99)
04/2012: Batman Annual #1 -- 101,394 [105,754]

11/2016: Batman Annual #1 -- 91,033 (+ 12.8%)

A second $5 Batman book this month, also over 90K. That’s four of the top seven titles this month starring Batman. Batman, Batman, Batman!

And actually, what I said above about all of the Rebirth titles having f.o.v.s is not true; the Annuals had but a single regular cover. Which makes the Batman Annual’s 91K a bit more impressive. And this was an anthology, with five stories between its covers, which also isn’t supposed to work these days. Time for DC to look into starting up a bi-monthly Batman anthology…

Justice League is also running behind its New 52 counterpart, but that was Geoff Johns & Jim Lee.

What’s a bit more disconcerting is that Justice League has already dropped to where the New 52 series was near the end of its run. So it needs to start stabilizing pretty soon…

The new Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures mini-series is being published by IDW so I won’t be tracking it with the DC sales. But if you’re interested, the first multiple-variant-fueled returnable issue charted at #14 with sales of 75,974 (or 83,571 when adjusted up 10% for returnability). DC’s previous Batman/TMNT series launched at 134,526 [164,941] and ended at 64,911.

If this were a monthly book, we could confidently call these standard attrition numbers. But in this brave new world of twice-monthly comics we’re not entirely sure what standard attrition should mean. DC’s previous weekly books typically saw sales drop 5-6% over the course of a month, with the first issue of the month usually showing a slightly steeper drop-off than the other issues. So should we expect to see a twice-monthly comic settle down to 4% or so over the course of a month? Or will it end up being closer to the 2.5-3.5% per issue that we call standard attrition for a monthly comic? Time will tell, I suppose…

Remember when the Red Hood was red hot? That was ten years ago. Yes, some of those percentages are large, but that’s because over its history since the New 52 the sales have always trended towards horrible.

My theory on Batgirl sales is that every new iteration starts off with good sales, because many people want a good Batgirl series. But then sales fall off, because different people’s ideas on what a good Batgirl series should be are widely divergent. Granted this is true of many corporate comics characters, but the effect seems especially pronounced with Batgirl.

90 - BATGIRL AND THE BIRDS OF PREY ($2.99)
11/2006: Birds of Prey #100 -- 34,607

Tracking pretty much on par with the New 52 BoP series. I mean issues #2, 3 & 4 sales are nearly identical. It’s kind of scary, and not much of a good sign going forward.

96 - DOOM PATROL (Young Animal) ($3.99)
09/2016: Doom Patrol #1 -- 83,848 (+801.7%)
10/2016: Doom Patrol #2 -- 41,642 (- 50.3%)
11/2016: Doom Patrol #3 -- 33,154 (- 20.4%)

Returnable and f.o.v.; see the fine print at the end of the column.

I’m guessing this is performing as expected? Sure it’d be nice if these Young Animal titles were smash successes, but I imagine that DC will settle for selling three times what a Vertigo series would have sold. And I expect the real money on these will be in the trade collections.

97 - SUPERWOMAN ($2.99)
08/2016: Superwoman #1 -- 101,289

11/2016: Superwoman #4 -- 30,070 (- 25.9%)

No longer returnable. DC vastly overestimated how much appetite there was for Superman Family titles and has way overextended the line. In Superwoman’s case it probably doesn’t help that there was a bait-and-switch with the title character.

102 - HELLBLAZER ($2.99)

116 - CATWOMAN: ELECTION NIGHT ($4.99)
11/2016: Election Night #1 -- 23,561

121 - SUPER POWERS ($2.99)
11/2016: Super Powers #1 of 6 -- 22,282

New series by the Tiny Titans team of Art Balthazar & Franco. A kids series, but I really like their stuff too and you should give it a try, or at least buy it and read it with your kids.

Returnable and f.o.v.s.; see the fine print at the end of the column.

A larger drop-off than one would hope for. This is probably my favorite of the YA books, but then I’ve always had an odd soft spot for ol’ Carson ever since he was part of the Forgotten Heroes back in the 1980s.

11/2016: Raven #3 of 6 -- 19,154 (- 8.0%)

A typical third issue drop. Sales aren’t great for this DCU mini either, though there were second printings of both of the first two issues in December, so it appears that demand was under-estimated in some quarters. (Though the press release for the 2nd printing of issue #1 claiming that it is “best selling” is stretching things a bit.)

143 - DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE COLLECTORS' EDITION ($12.99)

174 - NEW TALENT SHOWCASE ($7.99)

Anthology featuring stories by participants in DC’s Talent Development program. So sales are really the point here.

175 - GOTHAM ACADEMY: SECOND SEMESTER ($2.99)

Why aren’t more of you reading this wonderful comic?

176 - INJUSTICE ANNUAL ($4.99)
11/2013: Injustice Year 1 Annual #1 -- 21,764
10/2014: Injustice Year 2 Annual #1 -- 17,086 (- 21.5%)
04/2015: Injustice Year 3 Annual #1 -- 14,905 (- 12.8%)

11/2016: Injustice Year 5 Annual #1 -- 12,277 (- 8.2%)

A reminder that unlike the parent title, the Injustice Annual is not a digital first title (though it of course is sold digitally). Sells almost exactly the same as the end of Year Five.

184 - THE FLINTSTONES ($3.99)
07/2016: Flintstones #1 -- 43,996
08/2016: Flintstones #2 -- 19,612 (- 55.4%)

10/2016: Flintstones #4 -- 12,740 (- 14.6%)
11/2016: Flintstones #5 -- 11,552 (- 9.3%)

People still reading this title really seem to like it, but maybe it was mis-marketed because anecdotally it seems that a lot of the people who have tried it have not found it to their liking. Maybe it’ll find its audience in trade?

190 - THE LOST BOYS (Vertigo) ($3.99)
10/2016: Lost Boys #1 of 6 -- 19,812
11/2016: Lost Boys #2 of 6 -- 11,037 (- 44.3%)

I’m still scratching my head over why this exists, but even with the largish second issue drop it is still the top selling Vertigo title for November.

Stick in a director’s cut edition of Batman #1 at #192, with 10,311 copies at $5.99 a pop. (These aren’t included in the summary statistics below)

193 - SUICIDE SQUAD MOST WANTED: EL DIABLO/KILLER CROC ($4.99)

The title becomes increasingly ironic with each passing issue.

10/2016: Southland #1 of 6 -- 16,264 (+152.3%)
11/2016: Southland #2 of 6 -- 7,787 (- 52.1%)

A larger than normal second issue drop, but a series that could ill afford it. I will not be surprised if one or more issues miss the Top 300 before it is over.

227 - DOCTOR FATE ($2.99)
11/2015: Doctor Fate #6 -- 13,090 (- 10.1%)

Final issue for a good series that based on sales probably should have been cancelled sooner. But these days it is tough for even a good series to find an audience, even when given enough time.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Image is not a normal comics publisher, and the typical metrics for sales success may not apply. For many titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the National Christmas Tree Association, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there if you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. I receive the magazine sales charts from Diamond, which are indexed. The issue shipping in October moved 2,492 copies into the North American Direct Market. So the newsstand sale is about 55,500 copies; add the 127,000 returned copies and you have a newsstand sell-through of about 30%.

Note that high subscription sales often are the result of some discount or promotional bargain, such as MagsforMiles or something where the publisher is receiving only a nominal share of cover price. Common with kids’ titles; Marvel’s old Barbie comics had lots of subscribers due to promotions with mailing lists.

  2. Does MAD carry advertising these days? Back in the day when I read it I know that it didn’t, but maybe that has changed. (I can’t fathom any other reason that DC would sell it through a discount/promotion…)

  3. “Does MAD carry advertising these days?”

It did start doing it, but I forgot when. Sometime during the 2000s?

  4. Those Young Animal sales already start to not look that good. I have no idea why DC seems to have less huge fall from issue#1 than Marvel in general (even if those are quite big falls compared to years ago), except that they seems to be a little less inclined to renumbered their series every 8 months.

  5. @Xavier: The YA sales are fine. They should be judged on Vertigo terms, especially since they’ll likely do a good deal of their business in trade.

As for the large falls from #1, DC gets them too when they pull a Marvel and do a ton of variants and/or incentives for a first issue (e.g. Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad).

  6. ” (The biggest question out of this is why, with those sales, MAD is only a bi-monthly?!) ”

Maybe because it’s the second lowest that MAD has sold in the 56 years that we have numbers for, up 9% over last year, which was the low, but otherwise way down from even a few years ago, never mind the historic average.

  7. I’m actually surprised Mad is so low. I know magazine sales are down and Mad isn’t what it once was, but that’s still surprising. It makes me think comic sales are even worse than I suspected. Why do DC and Marvel even bother publishing comics? Just go all movies/TV/video games and be done with it.

  8. YA are some great reads. I’m sad Lucifer isn’t doing better, but I guess you can’t really beat the original run and how it was nicely wrapped up. Red Thorn has been a fun read.

  9. I suppose there are benefits to getting ads for Warner TV shows in front of many eyeballs, esp. since the audience for MAD by subscription is likely different than DC’s normal comic readers.

  10. I’m curious why the YA and Hanna-Barbera titles are $3.99. It seems to me these are harder sells in today’s market, so why not make them part of the $2.99 line instead. Would that help sales? Perhaps. It’s like during the early days of the New 52 when lower-interest titles like All-Star Western, Men of War, and Sword of Sorcery were extra pages and a dollar more in price. Never got that. It’s like they were doomed to fail from the beginning.

  11. @Joseph Rice – I suppose they don’t think that cutting the price by 30% would actually gain 30% more readers. If it’s a title of limited appeal, they might want to go ahead and get as much as they can from that limited audience.

  12. At my store DC comics are doing fantastic! After reading this article I decided to compare my November 2016 DC Rebirth sales with the last issue sales of DC N52 and my jaw dropped. I treat the combined sales of the double shipping monthly shipping DC books as one book. When I do this my DC Rebirth unit sales for the month of November are up a whopping 530% in the horrible month of November over the much better months of last Spring. That is truly fantastic!

DC’s success with Rebirth and the continuing explosion of non super-hero trades show me that the comic market would be doing great if Marvel would just get rid of their totally incompetent management and do what DC has done. Marvel is dragging everything down and they need to stop. Why is it that anybody in management at Marvel still has a job in the comics industry? They would have been axed long ago in any other industry. Sheeesh…..

  13. I consider DC’s Young Animal Imprint a raging success. Especially Doom Patrol and Shade The Changing Girl. They have successfully attracted the the same readership as Image. When the Young Animal trades come out they are going to be on fire! The Young Animal imprint seems to be DC’s new Vertigo. Vertigo trades are doing great, both new and old. Vertigo floppies, not so much……

  14. “Also, returnability ended this month for all of the Rebirth titles, even those that have not had three issues out yet.”

Where did you get such a notion? I just checked Diamond’s website, and the listing for BATMAN BEYOND #2 (for instance) clearly states “NOTE: This title will be 100% returnable at a later date”.

(BATMAN BEYOND #3 will not, since BATMAN BEYOND: REBIRTH was the first of its three returnable issues.)

Also, FYI, the February titles being solicited now, in December – WILD STORM, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, BATWOMAN, and SUPER SONS – all carry the “This item will be 100% returnable at a later date” note as well.

So no, nothing new has changed from what DC is offering retailers. New titles are still being made returnable, and titles are not losing their returnability before that three month window.

  15. Diamond appears to be sloppy in noting returnability in their reported numbers, and presumably in making whatever reduction they do for those issues.

  16. Unfollow had a giant “the End” on the last page of the latest issue. Probably the reason for confusion. I was definitely confused! But apparently it’s being rumored that March is it’s swan song for real, so we’ll see… I’ve been enjoying the book, so I’m disappointed the creative team isn’t able to continue forward with it.
