With Wednesday all the rage on streaming and comics turning more into horror with each passing day, Top Shelf may have the latest horror hit on its hands. Today, the publisher announced details Ghoul, a massive OGN from debut cartoonist Kasey Iris. Moreover, Iris Iris also created a Spotify PLAYLIST to accompany her debut.

Ghoul follows teenager Lyn and her “imaginary” friend Meg, who’s really the spirit of a friend who has passed away. Together, the two adventure through the new apartment complex Lyn and her family moved into.

Official description from Top Shelf:

When they were little, Lyn and Meg promised to be friends forever…but now Meg is dead, and Lyn is 15 and miserable. Moving into a new condo with her family doesn’t help, especially given the gossipy neighbors. But just when Lyn needs a friend the most, a monstrous cartoon ghoul climbs out of the pages of a comic book and into her life! The bizarre duo will soon discover just how many secrets lie within the walls of Forest Court Apartments.

“I wrote Ghoul as a gift to my younger self and as a little escape from reality. It is a reimagination of my own experiences with love, loss, and hope,” Iris said in a press release from Top Shelf. “Ghoul is a reminder that while everything may seem complicated and dark, there is still joy and light in this world.

The story is the first graphic novel from Kasey Iris, a Chicago-living cartoonist originally from Hong Kong. A young adult book geared for 13-17 year olds, Ghoul clocks in at 292 pages and with a list price of $19.99. It will be available wherever books are sold.

First launching in 1997, Top Shelf was purchased by IDW in 2015 and has been an imprint of the company since. Popular releases from the publisher include The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, and Lost Dogs amongst dozens of others.
