This week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 15 is a list I put together through the haze of my simultaneous New York Comic Con hangover/glow. NYCC weekend is always a good one, filled with socializing and activity and new comics inspiration. And it’s always nice when it’s over, and I can head home to get back to reading comics.

So, that’s where I was at this week, and, thankfully, I found a lot of great books to enjoy in that state. You can find my top five favorites below, along with the usual set of release lists.

And! One last thing, if you enjoy my weekly recommendations, I have a comic of my own that’s currently funding on Kickstarter through Wednesday night. It’s a horror book called Macabre Valley, and you can learn all about it here … thanks!

Top Comics to Buy for October 15

The Adventures of Lumen N #2
Writer: James Robinson
Penciller: Phil Hester
Inker: Marc Deering
Colorist: Bill Crabtree
Letterer: Jim Campbell
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
The adventure truly begins for young Lumen, now that she’s learned she’s the granddaughter of the legendary Captain Nemo. But what of her long-missing father, Nemo’s son? To learn the answer to his disappearance, Lumen and Nemo must both face heartbreak along with the peril of an amazing and deadly steam-powered palace. All this, as they uncover who’s behind their current dangers… an evil mastermind intent on conquest.
Why It’s Cool:
First and foremost, I think any book with Phil Hester art is a must-buy. But this one feels uniquely suited for Hester’s work, which is inked here by Marc Deering and colored by the great Bill Crabtree. I’m also just a sucker for an old school adventure comic, and this story definitely captures a lot of what I love about that genre.

$4.99

Endeavour #1
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Marc Laming
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DSTLRY
From 1768 to 1771, the HMS Endeavour, commanded by the famous Lieutenant James Cook, sailed on a voyage of discovery around Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. It didn’t end well. Now, a modern-day tourism company is offering a “luxury” trip aboard a near-accurate recreation of the ship, Endeavour. For a hefty fee, elite passengers can experience history with all the modern comforts. The vacation of a lifetime… until the unthinkable happens, and seven children are stuck aboard the ship, alone and adrift at sea. Rough seas and rations are the least of their worries as they quickly realize the real enemy is each other.
Why It’s Cool: Most artists’ work looks incredible in DSTLRY’s extra-sized format, but some art feels uniquely suited for it, and I’d say that’s definitely the case for Marc Laming in the pages of Endeavour, colored as he is by Lee Loughridge. This is one good-looking comic, and writer Stephanie Phillips does a great job with the tension and pacing throughout, making this one an easy selection for this week’s top comics to buy for October 15.
Price: $8.99

G.I. Joe #12
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Marco Foderà
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
A STANDALONE NIGHT FORCE COVERT OP! The FIRST APPEARANCE of fan-favorite SHOOTER!  How can she join Night Force when she’s imprisoned in Darklonia? Lady Jaye has a plan…
Why It’s Cool: One of the really fun things about this new run of G.I. Joe comics has been watching the creative team slowly doll out first appearances of beloved characters, and we get another one this week with a standalone story centered on Shooter. Issues like this one continue to make all things in the Energon Universe a must-read for us weekly comics sickos.
Price: $3.99

Superman Unlimited #6
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Rafael Albuquerque and Mike Norton
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
The deadly special forces of the Kobra Kult have infiltrated the Kryptonite Kingdom, and now this sovereign nation’s only hope for survival is the man whose very presence in the kingdom is a death sentence for him: Superman! An unholy alliance is struck, a Kryptonite King is crowned, and the Vipers strike in this epic next installment of Superman Unlimited!
Why It’s Cool: This title has been an absolute blast so far, and this issue is no exception. We get a story that pulls in a lot of fun stuff that this new run has been setting up — from Gold Superman to the Kryptonite Kingdom — and we also get an intermingling of classic Superman stuff, like the Supermobile. To put how much I’m enjoying these comics in perspective, this title has become my first read each week that it’s out.
Price: $4.99

Terrorbytes #1
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Felix Ruiz
Colorist: Fran Gamboa
Letterer: Carlos M. Mangual
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
In an age where technology intertwines seamlessly with our everyday lives, TERRORBYTES delves deeper into the shadows of our digital existence, exploring the uncharted territories of human consciousness shaped by technological evolution. This new series pushes the boundaries of speculative fiction, presenting stories that challenge the very essence of identity, morality, and reality in a hyper-connected world. In the first issue, a headset that lets users relive their greatest memories at the moment of their death extracts a brutal price.
Why It’s Cool: Nobody satirizes our the tech dystopian elements of modern society better than Mark Russell, and he’s joined on this book by an excellent creative team, perfectly suited to help him extrapolate his ideas into a terrifying, inhuman near future.
Price: $4.99
