The Owl House creator Dana Terrace has announced the animated series will return with an original graphic novel this fall, titled The Long-Lived King. Written by Terrace with Mikki Crisostomo (a staff writer on the show), and illustrated by Daun Han (one of its storyboard artists), the book will take place before the time-jump at the end of the finale, and center on the young Titan King.
King has never fully considered what it means to be a Titan — until now. Burdened by the knowledge that he will outlive his beloved Owl House family, he’s still determined to enjoy every moment he can with them. Even if that means using one of the Collector’s devices to wipe away his sad memories.
But when King accidentally erases Luz’s memories, he must enlist the Collector and Eda to help him recover Luz’s memories and confront their deepest fears along the way. Packed with humor, action, and stunning black-and-white illustrations in a fresh, manga-inspired style, this graphic novel welcomes readers back to The Owl House with an unforgettable adventure.
The Owl House ran on the Disney Channel from 2020 to 2023, and followed Luz Noceda, a 14-year old girl who’s transported to the magical Boiling Isles, where she becomes the apprentice of the witch Eda Clawthorne, owner of the titular house, and King’s companion. The show garnered critical acclaim, winning the Peabody Award for Children’s & Youth Programming in 2021, and it was the first Disney show to feature a queer lead couple. However, as Terrace put it, it was decided the show “did not fit the Disney brand,” and it ended with a truncated third season comprised of three specials.
Terrace comments, “This can open a path to continue the Owl House story, fill in lost gaps, and tell some meaningful stories that we couldn’t [do] in the show. Also, Eda can say ‘damn’ now.” The book marks the show’s first graphic novel. Prior to this, it had been adapted into two picture books and a browser game, and there were plans for a light novel based on the in-universe series The Good Witch Azura , but it fell through after a financial dispute between the (undisclosed) publisher and writers.
The reveal has come as a surprise to some, as Terrace has been outspoken about Disney’s interest in AI-generated content, stating, “Unsubscribe from Disney+. Pirate Owl House. I don’t care. F*** gen AI.” She responded to one “shocked” fan on Bluesky, saying, “I certainly won’t make a show w[ith Disney] anytime soon, but publishing is a different (and slow moving) branch and this has been in the works pre-KOG [Knights of Guinevere, her new show]. I’ll also never tell ppl to stop pirating TOH or criticizing their harmful practices. I always hope things can improve, though.”
The book will be released on September 29, and retail in paperback at 144 pages for $22.99. To preorder from your preferred retailer, check out its listing from Penguin Random House. In the meantime, you can watch the pilot for Knights of Guinevere (which is aimed at a much older audience) on YouTube.
