Hot on the heels of teaser trailer for season five, Sony Pictures has announced The Boys: Trigger Warning, a VR spin-off for the Meta Quest 3 and PlayStation VR2, that’ll mark the first standalone video game for the series.
Developed in collaboration with the show’s creators by Brazilian studio ARVORE, Trigger Warning follows an original character “who accidentally uncovers a grotesque Vought secret that turns a family outing into carnage. Forced to become a Supe, the player joins the Boys to infiltrate Vought and take revenge in the most chaotic way possible.”
Returning series cast members include Laz Alonso (as Mother’s Milk), Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett), P.J. Byrne (Adam Bourke), and Jensen Ackles, who’ll play a “twisted interpretation” of Soldier Boy. Homelander and Billy Butcher are also seen in the trailer, though based on the press release, we imagine other actors will fill in for Anthony Starr and Karl Urban‘s voices.
Ricardo Justus, founder and head of ARVORE, states, “From day one, we wanted to build an adaptation hand-in-hand with the people who defined this universe. Working with the show’s writers and cast allowed us to bring the edge, humor, and brutality that made the series iconic, delivered with the spark of magic only ARVORE can create.”
Lance Sloane, SVP of Virtual Reality at Sony Pictures Entertainment, adds, “We’re thrilled to work with ARVORE to bring The Boys: Trigger Warning to life in VR. Having the show’s creators involved in shaping the experience allows us to push the boundaries of immersive storytelling, and we’re grateful to collaborate with our friends at Meta and PlayStation to deliver it to fans.”
Before this, Black Noir, Homelander and Starlight were playable characters in 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone, while A-Train and Firecracker were added to Modern Warfare III; Homelander was also a playable addition to that year’s reboot Mortal Kombat 1. Other games based on comics by Boys co-creator Garth Ennis include Shadow Man (which starred the Michael LeRoi incarnation of the character he created with Ashley Wood), and 2005’s The Punisher (which he co-wrote).
Trigger Warning is now available to pre-order on Meta Quest store, at the limited-time promotional price of $23.99, and wishlist on the PlayStation Store ahead of its release sometime next year (presumably around the time the final season premieres on Prime Video on April 8.)
