The SUPERGIRL trailer wants you to buy comics

DC Studios wants fans to know where the story came from, apparently

Superman was not only one of the year’s most popular films at the U.S. box office, but anecdotally, comic book retailers suggested it may have actually brought some new readers in. That’s a rarity — for years, the success of comic book movies does not seem to have moved the needle for actual comic book sales. With the release of its first teaser trailer, Supergirl is hoping to replicate that feat.

The trailer, which dropped earlier today, ends on a call to action to “read where it all began,” featuring an ad for DC Universe Infinite, and a link to DC’s landing page for Supergirl. The shot also features the cover of Tom King and Bilquis Evely‘s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the miniseries on which the movie is based.

Superman and Peacemaker director James Gunn won’t direct this film, serving as producer and handing the reins to filmmaker Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira, but his fingerprints are all over it, with Supergirl looking for more visually similar to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy than anything we’ve seen at DC yet.

Nogueira is also reportedly working with Gunn and DC Studios on a Teen Titans project as well as Wonder Woman, and joins King as a part of Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran‘s creative brain trust. Gillespie is best known for his dramas like I, TonyaDumb Money, and the Disney event film Cruella.

In Supergirl, the titular hero heads to space to celebrate her birthday, but gets wrapped up in tragedy and a quest for revenge. Jason Momoa co-stars as Lobo, the fan-favoriet intergalactic bounty hunter who represents all the excesses of ’90s comics in both the best and worst ways.

Lobo previously made his live-action debut in Krypton, in which the character was played by Emmett Scanlan, who previously appeared in Constantine and Guardians of the Galaxy. Supergirl has appeared in two prior live-action incarnations — one in 1984 (starring Helen Slater in the title role) and then on the small screen with Melissa Benoist as Kara.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis and production logline:

When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

Alcock stars alongside Matthias SchoenaertsEve RidleyDavid KrumholtzEmily Beecham, and Jason Momoa. DC Studios heads Peter Safran and James Gunn are producing the film, which is based on characters from DC, Supergirl based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film is executive produced by Nigel GostelowChantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther. Behind the camera, Gillespie is joined by director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer Neil Lamont, editor Tatiana S. Riegel, costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, Visual Effects Supervisor Geoffrey Baumann, and composer Ramin Djawadi.

Supergirl is expected in theaters on June 26.
