TV Insider reports Syfy and USA Network‘s Resident Alien will conclude with its fourth and current season. Showrunner Chris Sheridan confirmed the news, telling the website, “I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season. Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending. I’m so proud of how good season four is, and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favorite episode of the series.”
Based on the Dark Horse Comics series by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, Resident Alien is a comedy drama starring Alan Tudyk as “Harry Vanderspiegle,” a caustic alien disguised as a doctor in the town of Patience, Colorado. The show, which also stars Sara Tomko, Alice Wetterlund, Corey Reynolds, Levi Fiehler, Judah Prehn, Elizabeth Bowen, and Meredith Garretson, premiered on Syfy in 2021, and while not a huge hit, it garnered enough praise to win Best Cable Series, Comedy, at the Hollywood Creative Alliance‘s Television Awards.
Ratings for the show’s extended second (16-episode) season were heavily affected by a midseason hiatus, which, presumably coupled with the WGA & SAG-AFTRA strikes, led to the show’s third having a truncated, eight-part run in 2024. Despite increased attention to the series after it was added to Netflix, it remained on the bubble, and it was decided to air the show on USA Network, reportedly so it would continue to be broadcast on an NBCUniversal channel, instead of being canceled or sold to a rival media company.
The series finale will premiere on Syfy and USA on Friday, August 8, at 11 pm ET/PT, while the antepenultimate episode, “Mine Town,” will air that time tonight. New episodes are added to Peacock the week after they premiere. Sheridan promises the finale “gives Resident Alien a very satisfying ending while also leaving the door cracked open for any future this world may have. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
In the meantime, the show’s more subdued source material continues to go strong, with the latest four-issue miniseries, Resident Alien: The Book of Changes, set to begin on August 20.
