Yesterday, via The Hollywood Reporter, Kick-Ass creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. announced they are reteaming on Psychic Sam, a violent, Minority Report-esque action series about a vigilante, who hears a voice telling him the names and addresses of future murderers. It is now being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, and will be published by the new imprint Side Hustle Comics, instead of Millar’s Netflix-owned company Millarworld. At the time of writing, it has already exceeded its £20,000 goal, raising £22,549.
SAM NICOLETTI hears a voice in his head the day before something bad happens. The voice tells him the name and address of a murderer and if he ignores this voice an innocent person dies. At first he thought he was crazy, but as the bodies start building up, he realises he needs to do something and, after a while, he hears about a murder that’s SO HORRIFIC he needs to intervene. What would YOU do in this situation? You call the cops and they think you’re crazy because nothing bad has happened yet. But unless you take matters into your own hands, innocent people are going to SUFFER.
Additionally, it was revealed a movie version is already in development with producer Ivan Atkinson, who co-wrote Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman and Wrath of Man. This is presumably also not in the works at Netflix; Millar says of Side Hustle on the Kickstarter page, “This is something different. This is a cool little side project where he and the artist co-create something together and they’re building a little library.”
Before the announcement, Millar had teased the book on social media by claiming he had been approached by Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski about a new project at the House of Ideas, and that he had a new idea for a Superman comic, implying he would write Marvel and DC’s upcoming crossover. However, as Millar tells Bleeding Cool, “Being a fanboy, both invitations were very interesting, and I carved out 12 weeks in my Millarworld schedule. But when I sat down to write, at the end of last year, my brain went in a completely different direction that involved neither Marvel nor DC.”
Suffice to say, Millar’s announcement was swiftly overshadowed when Marvel and DC revealed the Deadpool and Batman crossover, featuring a script by Millar’s nemesis Grant Morrison, among others.
In any case, for more details on the project and its goals, and to check out the interior artwork, head to Kickstarter. The crowdfunder ends July 9.
