Variety reports an adult-aimed animated series based on Monstress is being developed at Amazon MGM Studios, presumably for the Prime Video streaming service. The steampunk fantasy series, created by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, debuted at Image in 2015, and tells the story of a 17-year old slave girl with a literal monster living inside of her, who embarks on a quest to avenge her mother.

Steven Maeda, the co-showrunner on the first season of Netflix’s One Piece, will write and executive produce the show with his wife Tiffany Greshler, who also wrote for the first season of One Piece. In a 2024 interview, Maeda referred to the prospective adaptation as a “labor of love.” Other executive producers will include Liu, Takeda, and Hivemind Entertainment’s Jason Brown & Ryan Stayton (The Witcher, Ninjak vs the Valiant Universe).

Since its debut in 2015, Monstress has racked up multiple awards, including the Hugo for Best Graphic Story from 2017 to 2019. In 2018, it won five Eisners, including Best Writer, making Liu the first woman to win the award. The creative team, who worked beforehand on Marvel’s X-23, also created the horror trilogy The Night Eaters at Abrams Books. The series’ latest arc will begin next month, with issue #61 on April 22.

If picked up, Monstress will join an increasingly robust slate of adult animated series at Prime Video, that also includes Invincible (now halfway through its fourth season), The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and the upcoming Wytches and Lore Olympus. It’ll also mark Liu’s second media writing credit, following 2014’s anime film Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher, which she wrote the story for.
