BOOM! Studios has announced the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers comic will be relaunched this summer. Written by Marguerite Bennett, with art by Andrew Lee Griffith (The Transformers) and Phillip Sevy (Tomb Raider), and colors by Joshua Jensen, the new series will pick up with the original “teenagers with attitude” a decade after retiring, as they’re forced back into action when a new, yet strangely familiar threat emerges.

A new uniform for a new era! The future is now with this visionary relaunch of the globally acclaimed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. It’s been ten years since the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers turned in their morphers and went their separate ways. But now they’ve been called back to the legendary Command Center to face a new, terrifying form of a familiar foe: Rita Rabiosa. They may not be teenagers with attitudes anymore, but are they still the same heroes they once were?
An Entertainment Weekly exclusive elaborates Rabiosa is “more cruel and vindictive” than the original series’ lead villain, Rita Repulsa, who was redeemed and became the Mystic Mother on the subsequent TV shows. That plot point will be retained by the comic, which takes place in a similar but different continuity from the shows.
When readers pick up with the original Power Rangers, they’ll find Jason (the Red Ranger) has become a martial arts instructor; Kimberly (Pink) is dealing with already ageing out of her gymnastic career; Zack (Black) is working as a public defender; Trini (Yellow) is a diplomat; and that Billy (Blue) remained in Angel Grove to train new Rangers. Tommy Oliver (Green/White)’s whereabouts will be a mystery when the comic begins.
BOOM! began publishing Power Rangers comics in 2015, and the new book comes during a lull for the TV shows, which concluded with Netflix’s 30th anniversary special Once & Always in 2023. (A reboot is currently in development for Disney+, with Percy Jackson showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz attached to produce.) Bennett herself previously wrote the initial MMPR series for a brief arc in 2018, between Kyle Higgins and Ryan Parrott‘s runs.
The current Power Rangers comic, a reimagining set in an alternate timeline called Power Rangers Prime, will conclude in the meantime with issue #16 on April 8. The original setting’s revival will be accompanied by Power Rangers Unlimited, a book teaming up Rangers from every era, and Power Rangers: Green, which will follow Tommy in the far future, when he’s the last surviving member of the team.
Issue #1 of the relaunch will be released on June 3, with a main cover by Jim Cheung, and variants by Griffith, Miguel Mercado, Taurin Clarke, Francesco Tomaselli, Annie Wu, and Sweeney Boo. You can check out Griffith’s cover, interior pages, and character designs at Entertainment Weekly. A preview for all three new Power Rangers comics will be featured in the Comics Giveaway Day release Power Rangers #0, due out Saturday, May 2.
