Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, the new animated Disney+ series, premiering with two episodes on Monday, April 6.
Set between The Clone Wars and Rebels, the show follows former Sith Lord (Darth) Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) as he rebuilds his criminal empire on the gritty world of Janix, as well as Twi’lek fugitive Jedi Padawan Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon), “who may just be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.” The trailer also introduces us to detective Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura), and his droid Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade), both of whom were previously revealed to be starring in the prequel comic Shadow of Maul (debuting March 4.)
At StarWars.com, Matt Michnovetz, who developed the series with creator (and new Lucasfilm president) Dave Filoni, states, “Devon is a young person who’s living through challenging times and realizes that the future she once thought she was going to have is no longer possible, and so she has to adapt.” Executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo adds, “She’s conflicted between right and wrong, but there’s a level of innocence, too. When you see [Adlon] in the booth with Sam, it’s like you’re seeing Maul and Devon interacting together. He’s teaching her things alongside Matt and [supervising director] Brad [Rau] on the lore of Star Wars and what the character is all about.”
The trailer also reveals appearances from Marrok (A.J. LoCascio), the Inquisitor introduced in Ahsoka, and the Eleventh Brother, whom Clancy Brown voiced in Tales of the Jedi. Additional cast members include Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David C. Collins as Spybot, and Steve Blum as Icarus. Kast, a Mandalorian member of Maul’s Shadow Collective, previously appeared in the final season of The Clone Wars, and the comics series Son of Dathomir.
Two episodes will be released each week, in the run-up to the finale on Star Wars Day, May 4. For stills and comments from the crew in the meantime, head to StarWars.com.
