With You, Our Love Will Make It Through from Chihiro Yuzuki is a romance manga by Yen Press that started being released in December. If the story’s setting feels familiar to you as well, it’s because the prequel to the series, Hana and the Beast Man, is already available in English! With You, Our Love Will Make It Through has an anime adaptation handled by Millepensee, and you can catch up with the series airing on Crunchyroll! Here’s the previous review if you’ve missed it and look at the continuation volume, whether you should be tuning into the manga or not.

The continuation of With You, Our Love Will Make It Through mainly consists of two parts: the trio’s first outing together and the school sports festival. Chihiro Yuzuki uses these two events to further explore both the young beastman Hidaka’s existence in a space mostly populated by humans and the unspoken tension that’s blooming into a love triangle between Hidaka, Aida, and Mari. These societal and interpersonal sides to the equation are intertwined in both of these events.

Aida is not only a sensible young man who can read the room, but as hinted in the previous volume, he’s also very much a young man in love. Because he watches his crush Mari closely and is attuned to any change that happens, no matter how insignificant, when the outing is suggested, he puts Mari’s feelings before his and comes up with an excuse to give the two space. Upon Mari’s insistence, they go out all together, but even the simple decision of hanging out as a group presents unexpected hurdles.

We find out that there are only a handful of public spaces Hidaka can go to as an underage beast person, such as the library or the hospital. Unfortunately, they are simply functional spaces and aren’t places where young people can have fun, but they make it work.

On the personal side of things, there are many heart-to-heart conversations between the characters because they each value both the friendship and romantic feelings they harbour for one another, and despite the latter possibly jeopardising the former, they choose to communicate openly rather than letting their feelings fester silently into resentment. When two people vie for the same person’s affection, and it’s clear who that person loves back, there is no running away from heartbreak, and conflicting feelings take root. With You, Our Love Will Make It Through handles this complexity gracefully.

I appreciate Chihiro Yuzuki taking this direction with the love triangle because oftentimes, love triangles aren’t really triangles from the reader’s point of view. When the creator antagonizes one of the love interests or doesn’t invest time or effort in building them sufficiently, it becomes clear which character they want you to cheer on. However, in this series’ case, each character cares for one another either romantically or platonically. In turn, both characters individually and the feelings they harbor for one another, along with the friendship they have as a trio, are all equally important and Yuzuki gets you to care about Aida and gives him the chance to make Mari’s heart flutter, despite knowing her heart looks only Hidaka’s way.

In the previous volume’s review, I mentioned that we needed time to see how the series would handle Hidaka as a minority and how his anger or kindness is closely linked with the image that humans have of beastfolk. That thread continues in the second volume as well. Time and time again, Hidaka has to earn other students’ respect by being of help in some way or humouring them. Or he is in the mindset that anything remotely out of line will have irreversible repercussions for him, whereas for a human, it would be nothing to speak of.

This resistance, or in some cases, a hostile attitude towards Hidaka, puts him in a precarious position. We are reminded again in the second volume that Hidaka’s parents are a beastman and a human woman. So I can only imagine how conflicted he would feel about having negative sentiments towards other humans, when, growing up, his parents protected him with their ever-optimistic attitude despite the hardships they faced.

Now that Mari and Aida are involved with Hidaka, outsiders’ whispering voices and gossip slowly include how the three are always together as well. They butt in whenever there’s a need, though for now, their approach to Hidaka’s otherness and how he’s viewed is a little surface-level. That being said, I respect that Mari is still somewhat conscious of how they’re perceived in public despite her love for Hidaka, and her romantic feelings don’t make her do a sudden 180. We still haven’t seen what life and the environment are like in the segregated area or the rest of the beastfolk residents yet. That is something I’m looking forward to discovering in the upcoming volumes!

As Hidaka and Mari gradually grow closer, their intimacy also evolves. Hidaka’s primal instinct to lose himself in Mari’s pheromones slowly gives way to a conscious desire, and Mari’s trust in Hidaka enables her to initiate or negotiate how far things can progress, providing her a safe place to explore her sexuality with Hidaka. Chihiro Yuzuki’s elegant character designs enhance the intimate scenes beautifully and I’m happy to see it’s reflected on screen as well!
