Variety and other outlets report an animated version of Rachel Smythe’s webcomic Lore Olympus has been ordered to series for Amazon’s Prime Video service. Julia Cooperman (The Winchesters, Willow) will serve as showrunner on the adaptation of the comic, which presents a modern, romantic take on the story of the Greek gods Hades and Persephone. Webtoon Productions, the media arm of the comic’s publisher, will produce the show with Amazon MGM Studios and The Jim Henson Company.
Cooperman states, “I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and Webtoon on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular webcomic, Lore Olympus. My fascination with Greek mythology has spanned grade-school libraries and college seminars. Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling. We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike.”
Lisa Henson adds, “Through her beautiful and creative Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe has created a new approach to the Greek myth of Persephone that is as relevant today as ever, and features the kind of vibrant world building that we find deeply inspiring. It is a true privilege to be partnering with Webtoon on one of their most popular titles, which marks The Jim Henson Company’s first-ever adult animated series.”
Melissa Wolfe, head of animation for Amazon MGM, also says, “Lore Olympus redefined what mythology can look and feel like for a new generation, and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved story to our global Prime Video audience. Julia’s vision, combined with Rachel Smythe’s iconic world and our extraordinary collaborators at Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company, makes this an exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate.”
Lore Olympus, which debuted as a self-published webcomic in 2017, ran on Webtoon from 2018 to 2024. According to the platform, it has garnered over 1.8 billion views, and it won the Eisner Award for Best Webcomic for three years in a row, from 2022 to 2024. Del Rey Books has published the series in print since 2021, with the tenth volume, collecting episodes 234–260 (of 280) of the comic, set to arrive in stores on June 2, before the eleventh and final one releases October 6.
No ETA was provided for the show, which has been in development since The Jim Henson Company partnered with Webtoon on the project in 2019. It will join Prime’s healthy slate of adult-aimed animated series, which also includes Invincible, The Legend of Vox Machina & The Mighty Nein, Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss, and the upcoming series of Scott Snyder & Jock’s Wytches.
