One day after the release of Supergirl teaser trailer, HBO Max has dropped a first look at DC Studios’ Lanterns in a trailer for the streaming service’s upcoming shows. The footage begins at approximately 1:35 mins into the two-minute trailer:

Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, Lanterns will follow Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a murder in Nebraska. The ten-second compilation emphasizes a scene where Hal puts John to the test by leaving his Green Lantern ring in a car the pair are in, before jumping out of the driver’s seat, forcing John to use it to save himself as the vehicle flies over a cliff.

In-line with the title, Hal’s ring has noticeably muted colors, presumably as a way of distancing the show from the infamous 2011 Green Lantern film. We also see John during the end montage of all the shows, running bloodied down a highway. Overall, the tone appears to reflect a TV-MA rating, which is something Nathan Fillion (who’ll reprise the role of Green Lantern Guy Gardner from Superman and Peacemaker) told us to expect earlier this year.

As well as Chandler, Pierre, and Fillion, the show will feature Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kelly; Garret Dillahunt as cowboy William Macon; Poorna Jagannathan as John’s love interest Zoe; and Ulrich Thomsen as Hal’s corrupt mentor Sinestro.

Further cast members include Nicole Ari Parker and Sherman Augustus as John’s parents (who’ll be played in flashback by Jasmine Cephas Jones and J. Alphonse Nicholson); Jason Ritter as Macon’s son Billy; and Paul Ben-Victor as vengeful alien Antaan. Laura Linney and Paula Patton have also been reportedly cast in unnamed roles.

Lanterns will consist of eight episodes, and premiere on HBO (as well as Max) sometime later next year, 15 years after the Green Lantern film crashed and burned. In the meantime, Supergirl will arrive in theaters on June 26.
