Dark Horse Comics has unveiled The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand, a new graphic novel created in collaboration with series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko by writer Kiku Hughes, artist Alexandria Monik, colorist Diana Sousa, and letterer Jimmy Betancourt. Due out this summer, the book will see Aang and Katara’s waterbending daughter, Kya, tell Korra a story from her youth.

Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.
The book marks the eighth Korra graphic novel, and the second standalone one, following last year’s Mako & Bolin spin-off Mystery of Penquan Island, also created by Hughes, Monik, Sousa, and Betancourt. Kya, who was voiced by Lisa Edelstein, was a fairly prominent character on the second and third seasons of the show, and previously appeared in the Turf Wars comics, where she revealed to Korra that she is a lesbian. The Si Wong Desert, meanwhile, was introduced on season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender, where it was revealed to be the location of the knowledge spirit Wan Shi Tong’s library.
Kya and the Secret of the Sand will be released on July 28, 2026, and retail in paperback at 80 pages for $13.99. You can preorder it now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your local comic book store/book shop.
Its release will come during a busy time for the franchise, with 2026 also set to see the release of the second season of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the animated continuation film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender‘s arrival on Paramount+. Dark Horse has even more releases planned for the year, including the three-part series The Kyoshi Warriors, starting May 6; for more details, head to DarkHorse.com.
