Paramount+ announced earlier today that the fan-favorite series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would end with its fifth and final season. With Season 3 fast approaching (it premieres at Tribeca Film Festival this Saturday, June 14, 20245, with a wide release on July 17, 2025), the good news is that Trekkies can look forward to two more seasons of Cowboy Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew exploring where no one has gone before, and the bad news is that it’s ending.

A major disappointment for The Beat’s Star Trek team is that it will be a short final season. According to StarTrek.com, Paramount+ announced that the fifth and final season will only be six episodes. Filming for these final episodes is set to kick off later this year.

The news came via Star Trek’s official Instagram account, which posted earlier today that Strange New Worlds would end with its fifth season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fifth and final season. Series creators share a heartfelt thank you for the epic “five-season mission.”

Season three premieres on July 17th on Paramount+ and August 4th on SkyShowtime. The series is currently in production on season four, with season five filming later this year.

“From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman. “We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”

The third season of Strange New Worlds is all set to launch with a two episode premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. After the premiere, you can look forward to new episodes every Thursday, leading up to the season finale on September 11, 2025. Excitingly, Paramount+ has also confirmed that the series will continue with a fourth season, currently in production.

Unlike previous Trek series cancellations, such as Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks, at least the Strange New Worlds cast and crew will have time to prepare a proper send-off for the series. The other casts did not have that luxury, with their cancellations being announced as ongoing seasons were being worked on.

Strange New Worlds has garnered praise from both critics and fans, with its first two seasons receiving the Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh seal.  Throughout its run, the series has earned multiple award nominations, including a Best Drama Series nomination from the Critics Choice Awards in 2023 and a win for Best Science Fiction Television Series at the Saturn Awards in 2022.

The upcoming third season of this exciting series, produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, features an impressive cast including Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una/Number One, Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M’Benga, and Martin Quinn as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. Joining the main cast are regular guest stars Carol Kane as Pelia and Paul Wesley as Captain James T. Kirk, and season 3 guest stars Patton Oswalt and Rhys Darby.

Co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers lead the creative team, with an extensive lineup of executive producers that includes Kurtzman, Myers, Mount, Akiva Goldsman, Aaron Baiers, Dana Horgan, Alan McElroy, Robbie Thompson, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Chris Fisher, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.

In addition to Strange New Worlds, the Trek franchise on Paramount+ encompasses Star Trek: Section 31, featuring the Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, and soon, the new original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. However, fans are speculating if Starfleet Academy will actually happen, and if it does, what this announcement means for the future of the franchise. Remember the days of weekly Star Trek? I do.
